What do you believe is cruelty or abuse when it comes to fish?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
BTW ,,ARIZONA does license dogs(not cats though)...it doesn't effect the shelters or ownership in any way other than to fund shelters(good outcome)

Licensing and permit are to different things,, licensing a dog in AZ is nothing more then creating revenue for the city and state. It dose not give any requirements to own or posses.

When I was younger I had a crayfish I won in a little raffle in 3rd grade after we studied them, and she got placed in a 5 gallon tank with an angel fish. The angel fish grew to be pretty large, and I was too naive as a little kid to realize putting him in a 5 gallon tank was cruel. He got so big it was insane. So I brought it to the LFS where they put him in their display case, and he's still there doing wonderfully. So I guess I was cruel, but I learned my lesson.

I dont like the idea of birds as pets either. Chickens are ok, if you treat them well, but they cant really fly so its different. In Denmark, there are sold alot of Red Tail Catfishes and Pangasius to unsuspecting new beginners, i think you should need a permit to house a fish over 1 meter, that way all the people of could house them probaly, could enjoy them, and they wouldnt be sold in petshops anymore. And Theres just when people dosnt do maintain there tanks probaly.

Sorry just cant get over the "touching fish with out there consent." I agree we should not be cruel to our fish and we are to take care of them to the best of our ability but I don't ask my fish permission before I net them or catch them. I net them because I have to for what ever reason. People shouldn't have there hands in any tank unless they are doing maintenance cause its not good for the fish. touching fish without consent is laughable.

There are people out there that say we shouldn't milk cows cause we are touching them with out consent.

Also the last thing we need is government licensing more things. The great thing about America is we used to be free.

I consider any action that would be hostile or harmful towards a human, but directed at a fish/aquarium to be abuse. Neglect, harassment (poking with things, hitting the aquarium to scare the fish, et ctera), all that stuff.

I caught a young girl (probably like 12) open-hand slapping a public display tank with a lot of fish in it at a mall. She kept doing it, probably amused by all the fish running away. I was not amused, and did not run away. One pissed off father and a crying little girl later, I stood triumphant in front of the now calm tank. I could feel the fish staring at my back, wondering "Who was that moustachioed man?"

As others have said, I can't stand dyed or mutilated fish. I'm pretty sure everyone has gone to their lfs and seen sweetheart blood parrots on display. So sad

Petco and petsmart selling pacu and asking me how big my tank is for the Buenos aires tetras I bought. Even though I am probably the only person in the area that has the ability to keep a pacu.lol

Hello; All of us are keeping fish outside of natural conditions, that to some degree or other could be said to be cruel. However, I do understand the OP to be considering "cruelty or abuse" within the parameters of what might be called "good fishkeeping practice". Having read threads on this and other fishkeeeping forums, I must conclude the range of these practices is extremely wide. Search thru threads on such things as water changes, UGF, stocking density, tank size for particular fish and such.

That, so far, some group is not empowered to dictate to me about how I must keep my fish is to my likeing. I have seen many of the things cited thus far. Over the decades several folks have seen my tanks and decided to start keeping fish. I use to encourage them. The large majority of their tanks ended badly for the fish. I no longer give folks any encouragement and in fact make the hobby sound more difficult than it is.

I do agree that many fishkeepers, fish shops, breeders and collectors have practices that are cruel or abusive whether intentional or not. Even so I still do not want a watchdog, no matter how well intentioned.
