My girlfriend work pretty far and has to pump $40 gas every other day:nilly:.

For me I like to be close to friends, families, and work but would not settle for a home needs remodeling.

i wonder what she drive and how far from work ? you should tell her to sell her current car and buy a hybrid or small car from Honda or Toyota ex: Honda Fit. I think 40-60 mins drive is consider is not to far. More land mean you can have more space for your stuff. Your wife won't complain about your tanks taking all the space.

i cant imagine what 45-60 minutes one way of commuting would be like.. we live 30 mins away from the city and its enough to make it so i just stay home everyweekend.. big houses are nice, but id trade our house for one half the size, closer to town anyday.. gas is 40 bucks to fill up my CIVIC!!!!! and if i were to be commuting everyday to school in the city it would be around 50 bucks a week just to get to school driving a civic..

currently my parents are looking for a house closer to the city.. they dont even care they will be looking tens of thousands of dollars by selling the house they had built 4 years ago...

but i do live in san diego county. the county is HUGE. and pretty much everyone commutes at least a half hour regardless of where they live because it is soooo spread out.

any of the houses we could afford that are closer have TINY bedrooms. :irked:
like little cubicles and you look out your window directly into the neighbor's bathroom. and your back yard is the size of a small boat. And your driveway dumps onto a busy street across from more of the same with people driving 100mph down your 25 mph street blasting their music or almost hitting you because they are trying to beat their last lap time. :nilly::nilly:

:yuck:

Choice 1. You don't live to work, you work to live, and therefore don't plan your life around your job (well ok unless you are me and the two collide), plan your work around your life.
A little extra commute is well worth the peace and satisfaction of coming home to not only a beautiful house, but the quiet and freedom you have outside city limits. Not to mention the flexibility you have with your land.
IMO the perfect place to live is somewhere on a lot of land, in a beautiful area, far enough away from everything to feel a million miles away, but close enough to have all your modern needs and wants.

the cost of fixing everything up will help offset the cost of fuel. An efficient car would definitely help. I enjoy a decent drive to and from work. It helps me get ready and wind down. I would not want to live "in the city" (even though I kind of do now). I enjoy the country life where you can do whatever you want without fear of pissing the neighbors off. More land= more fun.

Think of it this way, maybe the family and friends will come to you more often since it'll be more enjoyable!

If there aren't kids involved and you're not hung up on the mall and restaurants being nearby, live in the country. Your life will be much more serene.
