what do you consider a "monster fish"?

in my personal opinion monster fish are not just any big fish. Look at whale sharks. Largest fish on earth, but who could argue it is a monster? Has it ever eaten anyone(maybe on accident). It's good if the fish has the size, but it might not be a monster, it might be a peaceful giant instead IMO. True monsters to me are fish that are capable of holding thier own, and for some odd reason seem to kill or devour their tankmates. Now that my large catfish have thier pond with more room than they had before they fight over territory, before they had less space and were more or less peaceful to each other. They are true monsters. They terrorize anything I put in there with them, and they bite my fingers.(ouch) According to what some of you think, most fish on earth would be monsters. IMO it takes a special(maybe even short bus special) fish to be a true monster. I think most of us have giant or impressive fish. Good to hear everyone's definitions of it though, made me think of what mine was. lol

I consider a monster fish ones that most normal aquarists would not bother top keep or too worried to have in a "normal" tank.

Agree with the above, and would also like to add (here come the pulp fiction bit), what if a 'fish' devlops personalty like O's or my sev's. They respond in a pet like manner, approaching the glass or swimming round your hand's when you put them in the tank.

Howdy,

Great comments, I especially agree with Miles and Turtall.

I think it's a fish that demands respect. Basically, a combination of size (absolute as well as relative within species) and attitude. Anything big is a monster. Anything small and carnivorous is a monster, too. I don't think small herbivores qualify as monsters. It's not mere size, but size certainly helps.

A butterfly fish, going after a cricket, is a monster just like an arowana. Especially if you ask the cricket.

:iagree: with you on this...

so what is the definition of a monster fish?

is it just the species or is it the actual size of the fish or is it a certain fish that is fully grown and healthy for its type?

if its the last one i have some monster 5cm cardinals amongst my collection of bigger fish

size...attitude...personality. that is my definition. Bettas are ]v[onsters....attitude. Jack Dempsey.....size (sometimes attitude). and Oscars.....size and personality (not attitude they are wussies!) its all a personal thing.

My guppies are mosters they got a good personality.

I know there are different interpretations of a "monster" fish. But what size would you consider a fish to be a "monster?"

I have 2 catfish around the 9" each, a Jag and Clown Knife that's around 7" A lot of people considers this big, but I don't think they'll be monsters to me until they become over 12":D
