Merchant sailor excusively on the Great Lakes. Love it. Being gone for 4-8 weeks at a time makes it tough on the hobby though. A little tough on missses discus and fry also I guess.
Good luck on the firefighting. I had to take a week long firefighting course for the ship. Fun but I'd never do that for a living.

I work in wastewater treatment for municipal government, another one of those jobs that is about as recession proof as you can get..where there are people, you need operators to run the treatment plants and keep the environment clean and people from getting sick..
