What do you feed your BIG cichlids?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
mostly hikari pellets, xl flakes from tetra, some frozen mixes, sometimes maggots, peas from time to time and thats about it. but i'd say majority is pellets...

Same as most people here, majority is pellets, but a few of the big guys LOVE night crawlers and every few weeks to give them something to do I will get a big batch of feeder guppies and let them gobble them up. And whenever stray cave crickets make their way into the house i throw them in.

90% BIO GOLD
10% FROZEN (bloodworms, mysis shrimp, prawns)

My Oscar only eats mealworms, crickets, bugs and other worms.
My Vieja eats mealworms, pallets and steals the courgette meant for the plecos!

that can get very expensive very quickly. i feed 1.5-2 lbs of smelt/shimp per feeding. that's a lot of pellets. smelt is $2/lb shrimp is $3 or $4

How many times a week do you feed 1.5 to 2 lbs of smelt/shrimp a week and how big is your tank, that is a tremendous amount of food. Have you ever weighed that food or is this just an estimate?

Bloodworms 2 times a day, mussels 1 time a day, tetra xl flakes 1 time a day

Currently FD Bloodworms as the staple and beefheart as a treat. But today I'll be getting some pellets to use as a staple.
