i think i need to investigate the B1 story. but surely this would not be a problem in nature as they don't get fed pellets out there and they do pretty well eating fish.

Right, but they are eating live fish. The claim behind the B1 deficiency is that when the fish/shrimp are killed, their cells begin to break down, allowing the thiaminase to react with the thiamin (vitamin B1).

The process is slowed in freezing temps, but not stopped.

That's very interesting... Thanks for the info.
I do feed my guy 2 live goldfish once a week. I also have the prawns frozen, so i think he's safe.

Yeah most seafood is fresh, so as long as you're not keeping it in the freezer longer than a month you should be fine. Keeping a quality high protein pellet in their diet should help too.

I've honestly never had any luck getting my channa's on pelleted food, even upon starving they never recognized it as a food source. The diet will vary according to the species, but what everyone feeds them is basically the same. Insects, worms, inverts, etc. I feed them on a 1 day on 2 day off sched. I personally don't feed them that much because I've read that overfeeding can detrimentally affect the development of their sexual organs, and the main reason why I really feed them sparingly is because I hardly ever change the water in their tanks.
