What do you guys think? Too many fish?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
How do you sex them anyway.....? When they get older I mean.... On the L. Fuellerborni it seems like the ones with lots of color or the ones that aren't tanish? Are male? What about the Maylandia?

Well this is my passion I can't help but feel obligated to be dedicated. THey're amazing if people would just give them the chance they deserve. I wish there were some cruelty laws for "Ornamental" fish so that Goldfish, Koi, Betta's etc... wouldn't be sold with one gallon aquariums. I haven't gotten a lot of feedback on my shipping thread. But it seems to me that we could use a simple Styrofoam cooler and put it in a box. And use regular bags and Bag buddies to keep them comfortable and healthy. Are they especially easy to breed? How will I know that they're breeding or "Holding?". I"m so fascinated by all this. IT seems that the female's throat is sort of swelled up when they're "holding?".

The photos are so poor I feel bad. The females are actually a pretty rich orange/peach with dark blue spots. The male is a sort of washed out peach/blue marbling...but he darkens up often.

Sexing the Maylandia even as adults isn't foolproof. Typically, the male is bigger and though colored identically, he is a bit brighter. The both have egg spots, but the male's is usually bigger. Seeing them side by side, it's pretty obvious. But, I wouldn't be confident sexing a single, age unknown Maylandia.

Of the two juvies headed your way, one is slightly bigger than the other. We'll keep our fingers crossed :)

I plan on going to my LFS this week-end and talk to him about shipping. I will pick up a shipping container and heat bags while I am there. I'll get his advice. If he thinks it's a good idea, I will bag and ship there so I can use his oxygen. When do you think your tank will be ready? As long as the weather holds, we can ship early next week.

The L.F. are very easy to breed. They are more of a harem fish and it seems one of the three is always holding! The fry grow quickly too. The male is sort of a Fabian/Larry the Cable Guy hybrid. He's gorgeous, but pretty much does whatever he wants when he wants. The ladies are really calm, but they don't hide a lot. They make a great "visual" in a planted tank :)

The Maylandia are amazing IMO. When there is any sign of aggression in the tank, the female always heads to the heater and hides behind it. The male stays out in the tank, but no more than 6 inches away. If anyone tries to come to that corner, he pushes them away. Since I only have one female, I am not sure if they are a harem fish or not. But, they way they act, I am pretty confident they are mated. They seem like they are tougher to breed...but I think if they were isolated, things would go much better. They are in my community Cichlid 150. Though it's generally pretty quiet in there, every once in awhile, someone tends to throw a temper tantrum and everyone heads to their respective hiding spots lol.

You should have pretty good luck with them!

Yes we will. I'm so very excited. Another thing has crossed my mind... How will I pay you for the shipping?

We'll worry about that later. I have no clue what shipping will be. I'll let you know and you can send Paypal, money order, etc later. I will be panicky the whole time until you reply they made it safe and sound! I would rather you take your time, get them acclimated and settled in. We'll settle up sometime after that.

Oh wow. YOu're really trusting. That's nice. I was expecting "I won't send them until I get the money... etc." Settle up I will because I will probably want more fish from you! Because I love the breeds you have. My tank is ready now. It has 6 zebra danios and three female Betta's 20-30 shrimps and two bristles in it to keep the tank bacteria up and running. I will do a large water change to get the Nitrates as low as I can before adding them. And the guys in there (except the bristles and shrimps will) go back to their respective 10 -20 gallon tanks. The Danio's will go to my cycled 20 that will be planted to get the bacteria bed up in there too. MY male Betta will be happy to have his girlfriend back on the other side of the divider instead of looking at that "Ugly intrusive" male on the other side. The tank they're going into has been cycled about three weeks now.

But just to make sure I get what you're saying... I won't owe you anything until after they arrive or before... I just want to be sure since this weeks paycheck is pretty much accounted for with some bills that are due at the beginning of the month... you know how that goes I'm sure. Registration sticker for my car, gas, insurance for my car, a program I need for school... GUH!!!

This hobby would be a lot more fun if we could actually afford it, huh? :D

Yeah, I hear ya'. I have been eyeing a 125 set up at the LFS for a couple of months. Everytime I stop in, he asks me if I am ready to load it up. I could swing the price of the tank...but it's the expense of having to add on a new room or buying a bigger house that makes me think twice!

Years ago, I had a 75 gallon tank. I spent very, very little money and to be honest, really didn't enjoy having it. I finally gave it away.

Now I have 7 tanks set up, one small set up on stand-by and am picking up a 49 cube this week-end. I love every single minute I spend watching, taking care of and talking about the hobby :) I honestly don't spend much...I buy used when I can, I buy bulk food, Prime, etc. My LFS is very easy to work with and it's always fun to stop in to see current stock. I would love to have a couple of 300g tanks...but I too have to watch the leftover pennies. But, I promise, a new canister filter is worth every single box of macaroni and cheese I can stomach!

Is there any better day for you to receive the fish? Are you at school during the day?

Fridays are good. I'm free all day. Mondays and Wednesdays I'm at school till probably 4 or five. so only if I could receive them after four or five would those days be good. Tuesdays and Thursdays I work starting at four so before 2 on those days would be good. But I'm not sure you can specifically set the time you want them to get there... lol. I"m not sure I won't have to go to the airport to pick them up. I'm not sure..... I've never done this before... But Fridays are the very best days. I don't work and I'm not in school... Saturdays and Sundays are no good. I'm too busy those days with work and other things to be sure when I could be available to pic them up.

LOL!!!! I"m watching my Green Spotted puffer do the most ridiculous thing... he's "Biting" the bubbles coming out of the filter. I guess Mr. Buzzbee needs some snails to munch on. He's eyeballing me.

lol, mine do the same thing. Petsmart gladly gives me a bag of trumpet snails to throw in the tank every time I stop in.

We'll have to PM addresses, etc so I can check shipping options. One thing I have learned by reading the woes of others is, Friday is the worst day to plan on receiving fish. If there are any delays, they are now suddenly 3 days delayed. From what I have read, most of the time the fish will survive a two day trip OK. But 4 days is pretty well past the limit of any chance of success.

Weather is our biggest concern. It looks like it's going to be nice here and I am sure it will be there too. But, you never know...the shipment may get routed through somewhere that is having bad weather. We'll figure something out :)
