I was just curious about fishing, and why you guys fish, because...I don't know, I find it a little ironic/hypocritical. Like an Animal Rights activist that eats meat.

I personally don't like the taste of fish...
But I could never imagine eating my Channel cat.
And I wouldn't go out and eat a different Channel cat because I didn't raise it.

So like, just...how does that work? Do you guys have mixed feelings or do it for the "survival" thing?

And one thing I've always wanted to know:
Even in "Catch and Release" fishing, can't the fish still die? Doesn't the fish hurt with the hooks in their mouths and being held by the gill with their body unsupported?

Just looking for some education on the topic =]
Thanks for sharing!

its not like we go around and say hmm ima eat my blood parrot and maybe some aros on the side

I can drink. All my friends hunt but you cant drink and hunt its just not safe but i can get drunk and fish!

Its fun and it's always satisfying to catch your own food... here we fish pike and eel, and depending on the size, and whether it's private land you can or can't take it home to eat. I don't think it hurts the fish too much, unless you use barbed hooks or it goes right down into the fish.

All fish is game-fish here in Holland and catching and relaesing in a correct way with all nescesary precautions will keep stress at a minimum for the fish.
I allways say, that I won't just sit at the water for days and nights in a row, but when i got my rods and my fishingmate, we do camp and enjoy the sunsets and quiet nights.
Seeing those massive creatures is worth it and catching them is the only way to get a good look.
I'm allways looking at any water and wonder what is swimming there!

I totally agree with everyones post here, its a sport as long as you take proper precations and don't stress the fish to much its safe to say that the fish would fine if I ever mortally wound a fish and I know it will not survive I keep it ... as long as it is not a undersized game fish which would end up in fines if I did keep it and got caught in that case I will find a way of "humanely" putting it out of its miserey....

All I can say to each their own, everyone is not the same and everyone has different forms of recreation/ hobbies... I have seen people that have multi thousand dollar stereo systems in their cars and live in a little about to fall down and be condemed house , I don't qwuestion them ... some adults like radio controlled cars ... and to some ALL of us would look weird to people that don't get the idea of having fish as pets they say well why have it when it just sits there and swims around you can't pet it , it won't let you know if someone is breaking in it won't kill a mouse if you have one in your house, But all of us here Do and Love to take care of our fish because to most its more then a hobby its more of a life style ... so like I had said To each their own

fishing is just fun. I also love to eat fish. I also love keeping fish, but I dont relate it to fishing or eating. They are just two different things in my mind. maybe because I wouldnt eat CA/SA cichlids. But if theres some wierd reason why we can no longer get food and are all starving my fish are dinner for sure haha.

I'd like to thank everyone for their opinions!
I guess I can see it from your views, what with the "thrill of the hunt" and whatever.
I wasn't being patronizing or anything, just curious.

So do any of you pondkeepers go fishing in your ponds? Or would you?
