good selection, trustworthy staff, competitive prices, worth the trip

Hmmm...Thought at first you were asking for fish specifically.lol

1. Water quality and maintenance.
2. Social relations.
3. Pricing.
4. Quality of stocks.

All four but they're already mentioned by previous posters anyway.

Thats about it.;)

I would have to say a knowledgable helpful staff and healthy livestock. Went into PetCo. the other day and there was a woman trying to sell a couple some tropical fish. They said they had a goldfish in a good sized aquarium and could they put the tropicals in with it. She said, "no the tropicals need heat. Put the goldfish in a bowl he won't mind, and get these" I turned around and walked out.

No surveillance cameras.

bowls definitely a no no...
but..
oddly enough contrary to popular belief comets, commons, shubunkins can live in warm water tanks(there suitable pondfish for this reason.). warm water will speed up the fish metabolism so it produces more waste, also the temperature increase itself increases the ppm of ammonia in the water. warm water also has less oxygen. so for these reason its best to keep goldies at room temp unless growing them out.
