That would be a little bit annoying. At least they care about the wellbeing of the fish, though.
Anyway, apart from the obvious price and quality things, what I really want to see is some initiative when it comes to ordering fish that aren't in stock.
Basically, if I ask if you can get a fish in, and you take my name and number down, I expect a call back. Even if you can't get it in. Don't waste my time taking my phone number if you're going to make me waste more of my time asking you a week later if you even bothered to look for the fish. If the management is on the ball, and you request a special order item, you should get a call, and it irks me when they just don't give two ****s about you and couldn't care less about getting you what you want.
I've left my name and number multiple times for special orders at every one of 3 separate local fish stores, and I've NEVER ONCE gotten a call back.
good water conditions, no floaters and most importantly I do not want to see 30 oscars in a 20g tank. or any fish for that matter. the only lfs that doens't have that issue is the ocean floor in phoenix. and even then some of their stocking is questionable .
I want to see healthy fish in reasonable space. holding tanks are pretty cheap and you can have your fish in the back while only bringing out a few impressive specimins per species for the showroom tanks.
and accurate labels and a decently knowlegable staff, ie can identify male from female dimorphic fish, can tell one species from another, basic care, etc.
i look for clean tanks, i mean i make the store look for me i sometimes take water samples from the feeder tank and get them to test it saying its mine and they usually try to sell me stuff to get ride of nitrates and other nasty stuff and i say well its your tank over there i want to see all fish clean healthy no ick, flukes, tapes, ect no floaters or dead fish in the tank
Rare/semi-rare fish. Predators are always a plus. I am not experienced enough yet to tank predators, but I enjoy looking at them, esp in a LFS (since that is a rare occurance for them to have any in stock).
clean water, healthy fish, reasonable prices . . . friendly staff is good enough, I just need someone who will help me once I've made my decision
I am pleasantly surprised if, after I select a fish, the employee asks me "what size tank do you have" or, even better, "what else is in the tank" . . . it at least gives me hope that they might stop someone from making a noob mistake
