What do you think of this stocking long term?

So the 7x3 will that cover the vent on the floor? Do you have a basement?

Yes but that vent can be sealed off as there are 3 other vents in the room. And that’s only if I put it on that side of the wall. And yes I do have a basement but it is small and unfinished.

My 180 sits right over a vent. So I removed the vent and pulled the duct out and put my sump in the basement. This allowed me to run hot and cold water lines to the "sump room" hook them up to a carbon filter via a thermostatic regulation valve and viola my start to a drip system (heated). I have a sump for the house in the basement I'm planning on running a drain to. Right now I'm using the heated filtered water to do weekly water changes which I will still use in the future also. Putting my sump in the basement isn't new to me I had it in the basement with my salt set up too. Alot of this isn't new to me but..... different. While having over 1000g of salt water previously the 180 is the single largest glass tank I've had.
Anyway my asking was that you could use that hole in the floor for draining for your drip if you so chose to go that route. Since you won't be using it to heat or cool that room....:D

Nice that is an awesome idea I’m going to check out my basement but my sump and everything is essentially right under where the tank would be. This is great!

I figured that's where you'd put it. I would have too but it was really loud and that is where we spend most of our time. So basement it went. I liked it because we werent using the vent before the tank went there because of furniture. It also made it so I didnt have to drill a hole in the floor or into the wall and then down like I'd done in the past. There is a hole on the other side of the room where my 125 reef was and one in my office where my 120 reef was. I went through the walls and then the floor so when the tanks came out id be able to repair the dry wall and no hole seen in floor. Tada! My wife liked this idea better too, she wasn't to keen on the holes in the wall or floor. Lol
But yeah you could run a drain to your home sump if you have one or to your sewer pipe from your tank sump for the drip.

Yeah that’s an awesome idea.

Now I just need to figure out if I’m going to get a legitimate sump or if I’m going to go the diy route

Legit sump and a used tank are basically the same thing. Minus maybe the sock holders. Unless your looking to install baffles and what not

I think I could still do the socks attached directly to the intake of the sump right

I may just do a HOB overflow (do you still use yours?) or just do bulk heads on the sides or in the back which ever looks more appealing

No i got that thing out of the house !!! I really wouldnt go with the hob overflow man. Tons of possible issues and that thing WILL be in your living area. SHE WILL KILL YOU lol

Yeah easy to make sock holders our of pvc twentyleagues twentyleagues has a pattent pending on that one lol

Or eggcrate. That easy peasy stuff. Plumbing methods, drip, and sump layout are the most important aspects. Also you probably know this already but im gonna throw it out there... Their are a few stories out there and on mfk of marineland 300DD failing so your choice of going plywood or acrylic is a great way to go.

Bigfishnut Bigfishnut is like the plywood tank king.

Yeah I’m probably going to do bulkheads on the back similar to the style the king of diy style of bulk heads with an overflow attached. It seems simple and he had his for years no problem

I think I’m going to try to find a tank somewhere between a 75 and a 125 to use as a sump and but acrylic baffles in it. I’d like to do fluidized but I hear they are loud and expensive and it would be right next to my living room.

The sump system has been one of my biggest set backs in making this tank because I really haven’t been able to decide 100% on the method I want to go.

What do you guys think of using 2-3 water pumps to achieve the gph and turnover instead of buying one expensive one? And possibly connecting them with a tee or just having 2-3 separate returns across the tank?

Easy build a plywood sump when you build your plywood tank. Don't "t" the returns off of three different pumps together, you don't want them "fighting"each other. Either multiple pumps or one will work it's up to you. Energy-savings might be higher on one pump. I used a plastic tote and a four drawer storage chest for my sump/wet dry. Works great! Looks like crap. LOL
