What does everyone think about Terra Cotta pots?

The kind one would buy at Home Depot? I'm assuming they are safe correct?

I ask because someone raised a point in another post, and I wasn't clear either way.

Can anyone help me out, because I was just going to go buy a couple large ones.

If terra cotta flowerpots weren't safe, all of my fish...other than those in tanks with PVC pipe...would be dead.

Terracotta is great for fish tanks, but hard to cut.

I have found that the Terra Cotta pots from Home Depot/Lowes are in fact not made from Terra Cotta. It's come type on concrete material.

The only real terra cotta ones I have found are at AC Moore, and they are cheaper as well.

and when you go just look for the chipped and broken ones usually the people at the home depot will sell those half priced...

Got mine at Hobby Lobby, they are also real terra cotta. Have them in one of my 40 gl tanks, so far, so good!

They are great inexpensive decoration for any tank and provide a good hiding spot for fish.

Let me get this straight though, the ones at Home Depot aren't safe?

Because i notice when I break them up, there is some black spects in the orange? what is the black stuff?
