What does everyone think about Terra Cotta pots?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I use them in my Aba Aba Knifes tank. I actually filled them with gravel and planted some crypts in them. then took some driftwood and leaned it againt them to make caves for my knife. He seems to really enjoy it and I get a kick out of having a "planter" in my tank. I got mine from hobby lobby as well.. they where like 3$ each for the 6" pots iir.

They work for me. Ugly, but they work.

The kind one would buy at Home Depot? I'm assuming they are safe correct?

I ask because someone raised a point in another post, and I wasn't clear either way.

Can anyone help me out, because I was just going to go buy a couple large ones.

Thanks.
great for the intented purpose ,or perhabs terraruim if you really wanna push it

I think the little black specks in the terra cotta must be aphrodisiacs because everytime I add the pots to my tanks somebody thinks about breeding.

I use them. I take a metal pipe and smack a triangle shaped opening into the side, and use the removed piece/pieces as the threshold to the opening. For me the break pattern is pretty straight and doesn't crumble. They are great as a cheap cave for larger fish.

I can't keep planted tanks to save my life, so I bought the cloth plants, and used pea gravel to "plant" them into the pots.

Someone actually thought they were real yesterday!

I think they are ugly as well. But some fish see them as a brothel!

I've used them plenty of times. If I use them, I like to use the strawberry/spanish style terra cotta pots. I just use masonary drill bits if any more holes are needed or you can use a tile saw to cut them in half. Also a Rotozip works good if you get a grinding bit and will help clean up any edges.

what problems did you hear about??? i never had or heard of any problems.

i think they're easy to cut too. just use a tile blade in your saw and do it outside because of the dust.

or you can "tap" a hole in the side if you want to go that way instead of laying it on it's side. use a light hammer or the butt of a screwdriver and lightly tap the same spot until it gives out, then tap away at the edges of the hole til it's the shape/size you want it. have patience and don't tap too hard or you'll shatter the pot.

i've notice my fish prefer the pots with a hole in the side over the cut in half pots.

here's a pic of what i'm talking about
