What does everyone use to treat Internal Parasites???

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My source for praziquantel is nationalfishpharm. They recommend 25 grams per 2377 gallons of water. Or roughly 25,000mg per 9000 liters. I use that ratio to the total volume. They also state that pure praziquantel powder has to be dissolved in ethyl alcohol before becoming fully soluble in water. Just a half shot of vodka does the trick.

I'm afraid of the inactive ingredients like the other folks here. I am hesitant to use a medication that we aren't sure is 100% necessary that contains ingredients which have unknown toxicity and content.

The rays look great. Do you know the species? If hybrid they are likely captive bred with lower chance of parasites. Are they behaving okay? No skinny hips and tail showing?

One more vote for flukesolve. It is actually also easily dis solvable in water(unlike other prazi based meds) and harmless to any fish or inverts, specifically created for fish treatment.

One thing you need to consider though is that prazi only treats tapeworms/flat worms. Have a look if the white poop is segmented or not. If not, it could be a different worm.

From the UK, you can also get "Kusuri Wormer Plus". Its a flubendazole based treatment which will cover another range of parasites and round worms which can also cause white poop. It is more broad as it will also treat tapeworms. It is also effective against internal parasites like hexamita if the treatment is repeated. It is harmless to any sensitive fish older than a week or so, but not so harmless against inverts, kills snails. Its a one off treatment otherwise, easy to treat with.

If you dosed prazi, you need to wait a few weeks before adding any other meds. It stays active for weeks....unless you remove all the water via several large water changes.

Neither of those meds will harm the biofilter, plants, etc..

Thanks for the info and your patience with all my questions!!!

I am taking the advice and not going to use the tablets

I will do some more research and phoning around and see what i can find.
I am going to take a chance and email nationalfish pharm.... maybe they do supply to SA or put me in contact with someone here that i dont know

The little guys are behaving fine, i have not seen stringy white poop either
Just battling to get them to eat and they look very skinny to me
The other 3 pups I got at same time are growing and fat... these two we battling with..

About the only thing they have eaten in 2 weeks is bloodworms
Last night they eventually took one small piece of earthworm
This morning the one had a small piece of fish but the smallest one only nibbled on it..

I do believe they are hybrids... my experience telling the species is limited to what I have tried to learn on MFK... One looks a lot like it has bd blood in it except its brownish.... the other one maybe a marble x ?

C Coryloach ... thanks very much for your advice..

I have not used those tablets... i was too scared to...

I didnt know i could also use flubendazole so I am going to see what we have available here with that composition..... maybe I am lucky...

Thanks to everyone for the advice.. much appreciated

How old are they?

CANAMONSTER CANAMONSTER ... Unfortunately... I dont know..

There are no ray breeders in SA.. ( we bred the first pups in the country)
We ask the LFS source them, they in turn ask their supplier who in turn asks their supplier overseas etc...
By the time they get here there are 3 or 4 parties involved and to get any accurate info on age, what cross hybrid it is.. is almost impossible... you get no answers you can trust.

When they arrived they were very, very small... they could not have been more than about 7 or 8cm... they were smaller than my pups when they were born (ok... there were only 2 in the litter)
I actually said to my son that they looked like newborn pups.
I took 3 that I thought were nice hybrids
1, I battled with a bit but now eats like a little horse and is fat and grown a lot. She is with my BD pups
These two I am battling with
I have the two of them alone in a 1.2m tank with 4 small geos

I've found that established eaters help some of the more picky guys eat. You likely have more experience than me if you've bred pups, but I found that feeding frenzy of rays really makes them competitive, even for food they are terribly fond of.

Just keep them and the water they are in completely separate from your established tanks and other Rays . Keep offering variety of live foods.

Woefulrelic Woefulrelic No.... I have no where near the experience you guys have!!!

Most of what we know is from reading and reading this Forum for hours before we got our first babies!!

Those pups we bred.... we were lucky....
It was our first 2 rays..... and obviously we must have kept them happy enough for them to breed and bless us with 2 pups....
Hopefully we will get better and gain more experience..... Rose's pregnancy tested our stress limits to no end!!!

I hear what you mean.... maybe I must put 2 of the pups that wolf down all the food with them.... the 2 BD pups are really aggressive feeders and i was worried the were bullying the two little ones and that's why we decided to separate them ...
