What drives people to keep fish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The challenge. To see how successfull I could be with them. To see how many different strains I could get to spawn and raise there fry. To find that one fish that knowone else can find or get. To get that perfect color stain or finnage. It's the challenge for me. At least that's what I think it is. It could be that I was a fish in a prior life!!!!

grew up w/ a tank in the house.. and as another said.. I have other pets as well.. we always had a dog, a cat, and a fishtank.. so it was natural for me to have tanks. Then as I got older I found out there are alot more different types of fish then dog, cats, horses, birds, small mammals, reptiles, amphibians.. then likely all of these combined. with so many different personalities, habits, ect. And anything from a betta up to pimas.

having my tanks helps me get up in the mornings sometimes, and other times it gives me a reason to pause for consideration. I don't have kids yet. And I'm not a TV person. I am a computer geek though. So MFK slipped right in w/ my usually internet habits.

At the end of the day it's just nice to sit-back and watch my tanks. I wouldn't say they fill voids in my life, they're just apart of it. I went w/out a tank for about 2 yrs. Can't imagine doing that again. they bring alot more "life" into things then I really remembered. house just felt.. dull and quiet, and boring w/out the fishtanks.

For me, well i dont think yall have noticed :nilly: that i am a slight bit crazy and ecentric. lol. I just enjoyed keeping small tanks, then I got a gar then came the addiction. :headbang2:

I was just wondering, what in the world drives us to a certain fish, or for that matter any fish.

I know there are quite a few people on this forum that take this hobby very very seriously. What drives you to do it? The question of what drives me to do it, is mostly directed to gain more knowledge through observation and record keeping in a journal, interaction, stewardship, and through the study of those who have had the oportunity to do field studies in the natural environments of these facinating creatures, and have written books on the findings and having them compared with other studies of other scholars.

Sometimes in more serious cases (offenders of any sort) peoply often have a past, or background that makes them commit certain crimes or causes them to be overly obsessive about a certain thing. For example, eating disorders are usually caused by the fear of being overweight.

I guess this question is more directed to those of you who are very serious about this hobby. Do you keep big or scary fish because you are lacking something somewhere else? I feel the type of fish we keep is more a matter of choice because of individual likes and dislikes. In a sense, it is like choosing the food we eat and the region of the United States we were brought up in. I was born and raised in the Northwest. I grew up not liking Okra. Some Southerner's would disagree with me and say they absolutely can't understand why anyone would not enjoy eating Okra.

What about you have fish tank after fish tank? When I first began keeping fish, I started out with one 55 gal. I found that it provided me with many hours of entertainment and provided more positive than negative things for me in my life. As a result, it allowed me to explore other types and species of fish, through other venues other than just more tanks, but eventually within a matter of 3 years, I had accumulated four more 55 gallon tanks. Each one with different species and types of fresh water aquatic life. I had 3 community tanks and 2 species tanks.

Or the people that check MFK constantly? I check out MFK almost everyday. I do it for several reasons. Conversing with friends across the world. Finding out different ways people do things, but achieve the same results when caring for fish and their tank environments, learning new and plausible techniques when doing builds, seeing what others say about threads like this, finding out things about fish I never knew before. The comradery we share on this website. IT'S ALL ABOUT THE AQUATIC CREATURES WE LOVE TO CARE FOR AND HOW TO MAKE THINGS BETTER FOR THEM, SO WE CAN ENJOY THEM FOR A LIFETIME.

What drives you? What drives me is knowing that "I" do not know everything there is to know, about aquatic life. I strive to know more almost everyday, but it all takes time, patience, perseverance, determination and a deep abiding and sincere love of what we do as stewards and keepers of aquatic life.

Is it just a hobby or do you live through your fish and your knowledge? For some it may be one or the other and for others it may be both. As for me, right now it a matter of just being a hobby. But a very intense hobby. It's a matter of trying to be the best at what I enjoy doing. Almost like being an athlete. Most athletes run in circles of other people who share the same athletic interests (e.g. track & field with those who follow track and field events, whether it be on the track and field, or whether it be on the T.V. or radio). I do not attend conventions, or go fishing in the wild for fish to add them to my tank. I continually read, correspond and apply plausible principles and experiences of others, into practice. Hopefully someday, I might be able to go to one of the Great Lakes of Africa and spend sometime there exploring their lakes and hopefully, then I will be able to bring home wild caught fish and have an experience I am able to share with others like you and other MFK'rs. Some of you may think this is just a pipe dream, but if you really want it, "a person can change their stars."
:)
