We have a tank in our office here((I think 50 gallon)) that's got some freshwater african cichlids and a blood parrot in it, as well as a small koi. Now, I was told that i'd be allowed to buy a fish and put it in there, but the thing is, everything I want is either predatory or an escape artist((The tank has no cover, just a large light over it)).

I want an eel or something eel like. I looked at fire eels, caecilian worms, rope fish, polypterus, etc, and everything either kills other fish or likes to escape.

Anyone got suggestions for a fish I could get?

((Sorry if this is in the wrong topic, I wasn't sure where to put it))

First off... a koi should not be kept a) in a 50 gallon tank and b) with tropical fish.

It's a cold water fish iirc and not to mention will grow huge. I never recomend koi to anyone not putting them in a pond.

The Cichlids and blood parrot especially are very aggressive and might harm if not kill it after too long.

I'm not critizing you :) I'm just letting you know.

I'll be honest, I'm not sure what the compatability is of cichlids and eels... I wouldn't put a true eel in that tank. Perhaps a peacock eel.

Hopefully someone with more knowledge of their compatability will be able to comment on this as well.

It isn't my tank, so don't worry about criticising xD As for the koi, its currently the size of a large goldfish pretty much, so I think its fine for now. The cichlids and parrot have never attempted to harm the koi before and he's been in there for quite a while now so I think its okay.

as for the peacock eel, i'll go look them up! Thanks.

The tank doesn't have a lid...there's a good chance it will eventually climb out.

Most eel like creatures will try to climb out, there's no compatable eel-like fish I can think of offhand that would go in that tank. Honestly that tank is already OS once the fish hit adulthood, so why buy a fish just to potentially kill it?

What do you mean by OS?

OS - overstocked.

It already is anyway - You don't want criticism for it not being your tank, that's fair - but you will get criticized for wanting to add yet another fish to that system.

Didn't know fish could CLIMB out...

No cover? Sooner or later some of the fish, or your new fish, will jump out. Fish jump...

Yeah, I desperately want to add an eel to it. I can't have one at home because I have a piranha, but I was hoping here i'd be able to care for one xP

And nope, no cover unfortunately.

No cover, no eel, literally...

get a cover and a home for that koi and then you might be able to get an eel all of the eels you listed above won't kill fish they will exscape but those fish are just preditory so if the fish get a little bigger or not much smaller then the blood parret you have then you won't have to worry any eel type fish big enough to eat a blood parret is way to big for a 50
