What endli have external gills?

my endli has no external gills Im wondering why and what effects this is it sex,species,etc

That second pic is awesome ! As far as the external gills I am yet to see an Endli of any size that has had them in person. I admit I have not seen thousands of Endlicheri in my day more like 100-200. All from 3" up none have had the externals though... My 3 Endlicheri included...

so do they always shrink/disappear with size, and in that case why don't they all have them when they're small?

Ive been on the hunt for one of those for a very very long time. I've asked every lfs and checked alot of vendors here. I can't ever find them and was also wondering why.

i think i read somewhere that a tank lack of oxygen causes them

Mine had them until the 5" mark.

I had 3 Endli Endlis around 6-7" and they had them. I currently have a 8-9" Weeksii that has the last of his external gills hanging out.

From what I have read and have been told is External gills stay on with great aeration in the water (dont know how it is true but im sure the pros will comment on this).

it makes me want to experiment over aerate a tank and under aerate to see which if any grow external gills
