I've found it is infact greater aeration in a tank that cause external gills to grow back....However, at what level and potential side effects is unknown

so you can grow them back?

Yes, but eventually they will dissappear

Do you have proof that they grew back? I have never heard of the growing back. Was it just one poly or several pcs???

So did I... but they eventually lost them around the 9" mark and never came back.

i've read a few accounts of this on forums, but i think a couple conditions need to be true for this to happen.

1) the fish is still somewhat in the juvenile (and may be sub-adult) stage

2) there are some remnants of the external gills left, so that the gills could regenerate, kinda like a damaged fin, for example.

and if the above are true, then you can possibly encourage regrowth by increasing aeration, although it seems it could happen without this too.

And it probably depends on the individual fish as well.

But basically once the fish grows to a stage that its genes shut down the development of the external gills, they're gone for good.

anyway just my 2 cents.
