What filter for 50 gal marine?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
A sump doesn't need to be expensive. Look around your city for restaurant supply stores. They sell 30 gallon food grade HDPE tubs that work great. You can stick a skimmer, heater, media filter and add a small basket for some macro. An aquarium sump is useful to keep things organized.

so the stand me and my dad made for my 50 gal tank doesnt provide much room for commerical pumps. I think im gonna have to build my own, and just buy a commercial over flow. Im thinking either a 15 gal tall aquarium or 10 gal, will that be enough room for a sump? I have also been checking out the hang on the back refugiums..

would one of those and a protein skimmer be good enough for a 50 gal reef tank?

uh you said corals and i was seriously wondering not about the filter but the lighting do have the lighting.....

If I were you I would forget about a canister filter unless you plan on cleaning it every week it will turn into a nitrate factory quickly. join a local reefers club there is always tons of good used equipment out there. Reefing is a addiction people are constantly upgrading. pick up a skimmer and a hob overflow and use the 10 or 15 gallon as a sump silicone in a partition there are plenty of DIY plans out there. just make sure you go heavy on the live rock that is your best filter for a reef very simple.also you are starting the right way asking questions before you buy useless equipment Read Read then read some more join several reefing forums and lastly remember you are always going to get several different answers to any one question its up to you to decide which one fits your budget and level of work you are willing to devote to your reef
Just take your time and plan it before you leap I hate old cliche's but the one that rings true is Nothing good happens fast in a reef tank
Just my opinions nothing else

thx guys, ive continued my research and I've decided on a sump/refugium. I think im going to buy the aqueon proflex and set it up as a refugium and get their overflow. I'd much rather save money and set up my own, but im a lil worried about leaks.
