What filter is best?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The best filter? One that is properly maintained, along with water changes, and one that fits into ones budget. :)

+1 Well said.

The best filtration equipment in the world will quickly turn useless unless you: a. stuff it with the appropriate media for your water/livestock; b. actually clean the system regularly, and; c. stay vigilant about doing your water changes (or drip system)

Why aren't any body mentioned a sump/slump? In Singapore we are sump nutz! Most are customize with self preference for medias and it's expandable.
Maybe it's the blessing, the weather is fine all year round, but humidity topping the chart....my pro 3 start leaking after 24 months, haiz, replacement seals also would not help. It screwed my cabinet.

No doubt a great filter, but wouldn't an FX5 cause a LOT of water movement in a 75gal? Perhaps too much?

You're right, unless you fit the output with a spray bar you'd be sending the fish in circles around the tank.

Not true. I had a fx5 in a 55gallon goldfish tank. I had the outlet in one corner aimed towards the glass, worked great, tank was alway clean. Just have to think it out.

I guess if you place the output in a corner with both nozzles pointing at separate walls you'd get a nice separation & slowdown of the flow.... Not to mention the myriad of possible aquascaping / decor set-ups

Am I close on your set-up? (merely an educated guess)

Good point though, placing a limit on a device w/o adding sufficient caveats or stating the underlying assumptions is poor advice.

Thanks
