What fish can be kept with a Gar

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I currently have a 14" fire eel in with a 12" alligator gar and I noticed the gar bite him today. The eel has been poking at the gar with his nose and bothering him though. I'm wondering if the gar is just defending itself or if it will continue to attack my eel. In the future i'm planning on buying a larger tank and I was hoping to put the gar and the eel in with a few other fish... payara, 2 polypterus endlicheri, polypterus ornatippinis, and a silver arowana once they are an appropriate size of course. Anyways I have two questions,
1. Will the gar attack the other fish regardless of their size?
2. Will the gar grow to the size that the tank allows or will it keep growing? (grows to around 15ft in the wild)
Please respond ASAP any information is appreciated, thanks.

Are Pacu's ok with Gars? Would they eat cigar sharks? or red tailed chalceus?

I only wanted a jar to fill up the top area or a silver or green arrow.

OH and Red tail GG sorry i never owned a gar before but i had the other fish before so i know what i could be expecting from them.

I actually have the exact set up your thinking off.. not Pacu... (although at one point i thought about it)

I have a spotted Gar + Jardini + 2 red tail Chalceus in a 60 gallon...

I can tell you that 1st 3-4 weeks, The Gar was picking on the Chalceus tail, trying to eat them and such... Gar is 5-6" Red Tail Chalceus is about 4" The Gar didnt bother them after a month and are now doing fine...

Jardini and Gar have no aggression towards each other (Jardini is at 5") but that depends on the 8" Mark... which in time might be different..

Jardini do not bother the Red Tail Chalceus because of similar size (Red tails are about 5" now)

HOWEVER, i do have a Cichlid in my tank, a young Jack Dempsey of 4" and sometimes the jardini will chase it away, when fighting for food.. or sometimes just for fun.. But i have yet to see my jardini become overly aggressive.. (With that said, it remains unclear as to the 8" mark)

So to give you my opinion... they are acceptable when young... but later in life.. i do not know... i wanted to try them out and see how it would work.... If you want pictures they are in my album and you can see the Jardini, Gar and Red Tail with my Fei Feng and Jack Dempsey... I also have a African Cichlid in there but all fish leaves it alone... he's more of the docile fish.. since early in my fish keeping he fought with another african and is half blind... on the right eye...

Its a myth that fish only grow to the size of the tank this is because the fish dies prematurly before it has a chance to reach full size you will need the biggest tank you can afford as a temproary home for this fish and either a pond indoor/outdoor or a custome built tank as a perminent home for it. The gar will more than likely keep attacking your eel it will grow larger than it is an apex preditor and will more than likely always see it as food.

I have a jardin with my florida gar and longnose gar and the jardini nevers bother any other fish.

It's a 50-50 chance for the jardini. First you need to watch out if the jardini shows any aggression if not take your chance and do it. You will never know unless you try.

I have jardni, green, black and silver with my gars.

So many people keep saying that aros and gars don't mix well together cause aros have shiny silvery color. Actually gars are attracted to "SKITTISH" moving shiny silvery fish and aros are NOT skittish movers. If you do the combination of gars and aros and observe more you will find out that they do along fine. The only exception to this combo is a fully grown aligator gar.
