They can be very aggressive, I would put them right next to a red devil... If you are going for keeping it in there for life, a 4 foot tank isn't going to leave much room for it and another to have their distance from eachother. Just because people keep certain fish in certain tanks doesn't mean it can work for you as well, or is suitable either.. If your really wanting the Arg, I would just make it a centerpiece fish with the dithers/cons..

Also, how do you know it's a male?

Markings and extended finnage...unless they are the same?

For what? 1 fish? screw that, if that was the case I'd rather get red devils or jags...or something bigger.

So 48x18x26 103 USG / 380 litre tank is to small for a Veija Argentea?

i have no experience with argentea's but i think what they are saying is that your tank will be fine for that fish by itself with dithers, but in order to have other large cichlid tankmates you would need bigger tank to avoid any major aggression, also i dont think you could do more than one jag in this tank either, some people like one fish tanks but they are kind of boring to me (i like to see my fish interacting with each other) so if it were me i would keep the green terror and JD and maybe add in another small-med sized cichlid with dithers

If you get a male, yes ... I wouldn't keep a 16"/40cm SL long bull male in 4'x18" tank no. If I remember correctly, they are the second largest Vieja behind the blackbelts. And I rather have a argentea than a RD or jag.

No i meant if i was to have a bigger tank..then i'd keep Midas or Rd's andn ot Argentea....i wouldnt keep a Oscar,RD or a Jag or anything that size in my current set up.

@DarthPike

I'm not sure where your getting the info on 16" but the max size male is 11-12" noone has one bigger than that on this site and nowhere on google says different....females get slightly smaller.

Anyone with a supposed '16"' Argentea has stuck it on a rack.

The largest I've seen is 13". My male is 2.5 years old and 11". I think 16" a bit of a stretch.

That being said, I have my male in a 6' tank and cannot keep him with fish over 6". He shows no interest in smaller fish but will harass to death fish that are larger.

Can anybody tell me how to sex them?

Mine is around 3" hes the best feeder in the tank....other than the Silver Dollars he/she devours everything.

So far its not confrontational but it is one of the smallest fish in the tank..

Its in there with..

a 4" Female Green Terror
a 4" Female Carpintis
a 3.5" Male Jack Dempsey
2 Convicts and around 60 fry...both around 1"
4 Silver Dollars @ 3"

I forgot to mention that the tank is 19" wide at its smallest point and 24" wide at its widest (its bow front) so it is actually bigger than i stated...its 26" high aswell...not 24" i just put 2ft to keep it simple.

I don't think you'll be sexing at that sort of size, unless someone on here proves me wrong!! Here's a Pic' of one of mine from last night at around 6". Male I think?? NEV'
