I just get another tank for the problem fish. Just had to bring a 55 online for feeder goldfish who survived and are now 5".

I was in the US visiting relatives once, we went around to fish shops in and went to one in Santa Monica. Had some really neat looking little fish, 2-3" long, something like $50. The name looked a bit familiar and I thought $50 sounded like a great price for something fairly rare. Thought I'd love a couple of those if I could get them, but of course can't take them home. So I wrote down the name to look up later.
Me later at a PC: "Let's see...What are Arapaima...."
I wonder how that Santa Monica LFS got there hands on an almost extinct fish, and a fish that can grow to over 200 pounds. Truly amazing! If you remember there name, or a website please drop if you could. I'm not even going to get started on how it was listed for only 50.00$ and they knew what it was....

Hmm, don't think I have bought any fish and brought them right back, that I can think of at the moment. But I have had plenty of fish that I've re-homed and moved on over the years. Sometimes a community stops working out and fish need to be removed, sometimes I keep a fish for a while and decide I want something else, different reasons. I try to make sure when I rehome a fish that I sell (or give) them to an experienced hobbyist, so they will have a good home. Usually I keep less common cichlids, so it's not that difficult to find people willing to buy them. There have been times when I'm moving apartments or something as well and fish need to go fast; then I will bring them to the best LFS in my area, instead of dumping them on a hole in the wall or a chain store. I am lucky to have an LFS nearby (absolutely fish in NJ) that I know provides solid care for their fish and good advice to the customers, so I actually feel confident those fish will at least go to an appropriate setup.

Like many others I've never returned a fish within a day of purchase, but I generally do a bit of research before picking up something. it does help I try to keep a limit of one psycho killer fish to a tank and there is enough space for the other fish to get out of the way.

it's not that difficult to get Arapaima. There are a lot of specialized importers across the US that can get the babies. They are seasonal though.

Not that hard to get I'd imagine, they're farmed to be eaten. I presume the farms just ship off any extra fry occasionally.

I don't remember the name of the place, it was somewhere around 2005.

I've seen Arapaima for sale multiple times at a certain LFS. Funnily enough the only time I ever visit that place is right after I go to an aquarium that houses multiple full grown Arapaima.
