At nine I saw the fair in town and you could win goldfish. That started it for me back in 1980.
I’ve not been without a tank (or 20) on the go since, even took my Clarias to uni with me for four years.
As for how much I have spent on the hobby, I have a reasonable idea and suffice to say, I would be a very wealthy man with that figure in the bank now, but only financially, I would have missed out on so much other stuff without the fish.
It’s only money and you can’t take it with you when you go to the big aquarium in the sky!

Forgot to add mollies, platies and swordtails too. Had bunches of those. My dad took me to this hatchery in southern maryland that had huge guppies...females were almost 4 inches and the males three.

I was about 5, my parents had one of my dad's aunt babysit me and my siblings, and she had a 15g tank with guppys in it and I remember spending almost the whole weekend in front of that tank. Completely mesmorized

Mine was Asian arowana.
Not the fancy kind but the Asian silver arowana (Scleropages macrocephalus) which at time cost around ~200-500 thb.
The tank was way too small at ~100 gallon and it was given to somebody else though.
