Like the title says what fish surprised you most keeping wise? Like an impulse buy what was the most enjoyable/rewarding fish you ever kept? For me it was my Bolivian rams super neat little guys I wanna eventually set up a big tank around then at some point right now they're in a mixed continent planted community tank and I absolutely love them

My serpae tetra school. I am not the biggest fan of the small community fish, but i wanted some color and a schooling fish in my planted tank. I got a group of 6 and I am very happy with how they behave. Definitely a lot more fun than I would have thought and are a very elegant fish to have. Nice to see some schooling activity.

Filament barbs for me. Cracking fish. Extremely active and they get to a good size too, proper mini monsters. They have this gorgeous iridescent sheen to their flanks and after a few months, just when you thought they couldn't get any more gorgeous, they start to develop their signature 'streamers' on their dorsal fins. I've got six, though i'd love to have a shoal of about 20 on their own in my 180g.

My Wallace’s shoehead catfish, I found them one day about 3 years ago or so in the middle of the night and I was instantly in love with them. I paced back and forth all night and into the morning hours without even noticing it, just thinking about the fish. I still haven’t loss that child like wonder of them and I doubt I ever will. I’m dedicating my first 125 and 180 to them in honor of them. Honestly, I don’t think I’ll get another community tank until I have 500-1,000 gallons of just Wallace’s shoehead catfish.

Stingrays. Never knew you could keep one, until 8 years ago I saw one in an aquarium shop. Finally until last year, I had the privilege of owning a one, and its the best fish I ever kept. Their amazing personalities, and cute faces make me want to own thousands of them.

Another a pleasant surprise was my gar, I always loved the look of them but his personality completely shocked me always comes up front and "moon walks" across the tank when i walk by hand feeds and will chill in my hand
