What fish surprised you the most?

For me definitely astyanax bimculatus. Everything about these fish surprised me. Especially the behavior which is cichlid-like. Very smart interactive tetras. It is a shame more astyanax species aren’t popular in the hobby. They might be if more available. I’ve only seen this species for sale once in 15 years aside from the ones I bought.

Haven't kept puffers but African Lungfish aren't really psychotic, per se, just territorial and bitey. because they don't have good vision.

I had some goldfish in mine's tank to act as a clean up crew (lungfish are really messy eaters)

From what I understand lungfish are like a larger more psychotic puffer but god are they beautiful. I like the dwarf one the best.

For me my OB Peacock Cichlid. Was strolling around in a Petsmart for a replacement of my firemouth that got killed and found this beauty of a fish. His colors are a mix of blue, orange, and Dragon blood pink.
I liked my ob peacock. Very colorful and one of the smartest African cichlids I had ever kept. Shame the other fish didn’t like him...

Datnoids so far for me, maybe because it was a bit of a impulse buy at a lfs and didn’t know all too much personality wise aside from size, etc,.

After a week they became fearless, sitting front and center following me along the tank, always wanting food, they will even try to take shrimp out of my hand. The first fish I felt like actually interacted with me and observed me, a little weird sometimes tbh ?
