What got you started in fishkeeping?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I went to the aquarium in boston on vacation and was like inspired.
So I went and bought a 10 gallon now I have a 55 and hope to get a 150g.

It tood me a while to get the hang of it though.....

That was pretty much what happened with me.

I saw a "huge" thank (well now that I think about it, it couldn't have been more than a 20 gal) when I was a little kid and I just couldn't let it go. I whined to my parents about it until they gave up and finally let me get a 5 gallon tank (not much, but I thought it was great than). I was an idiot than, and a lot of my earlier fish died, but over the years, I have really grown attached to my fish and so has my dad.

Same, when I was between 6-9 yrs old, now 13 I had fish dying every day, I just didn't get it.
Just reasontly I got into live plants after I got new lights, it's like a whole nother ball park... lol.

Love of fish runs in the family, my grandfather was an avid fisherman (never got to meet him though). Fish are so awesome to look at.

i saw a family friends 6ft tank and i wanted one. he built me and my sister a 2ft tank but i ended up taking on my sisters tank as well cos she lost interest.
that was when i was about 6, im 25 now.

my grandfathers on both sides kept tropicals and my father and uncles and myself and my brother have kept fish so my very earliest memories feature fishtanks!!!!!!!!
i have kept a huge variety of fish for many many years and kant survive without a fishtank!!!!!!!!!

I went to the fair when I was about 10 years old and successfully landed a ping pong ball into a gold fish bowl and won a little comet goldfish. :)

I named him Sparky. He lived for about 3 years in a 2 gallon gold fish bowl. I knew absolutely nothing about water chemistry.

Every couple of weeks I'd sit some water out in a bucket to reach to room temperature, put sparky in a glass then dump the bowl out and replace with the bucket water.

He lived for about 3 years.

Well, I'm a bored college student and would spend the last couple hours of each night lookin up random **** to pass the time. I used to be heavily addicted to video gaming, but I had grown tired of it recently.

One night I was on a "world's most expensive ______" spree. Came across an article about that platinum silver arrow that was worth like 400,000$ (ar at least that's what the site said). That led me to look into what kinda fish it was. I saw that people actually kept fish that big in their private aquariums. Then it snowballed from there. Seeing these huge tanks (a 55 actually seemed huge to me at the time) really caught my attention.

I began youtubing various arowana vids and came across some overstocked as all hell tank with an MFK sticker on it. One of the comments said "It's a real shame you mistreat your fish like that especially since you're from MonsterFishKeepers.com." Well, I HAD to check out that site! Worst decision of my (bank account's) life! :D

That was only 3-4 months ago and I still don't have my monster tank setup, but I'm damn close! Another month or so and I'll have a 180 (largest I can fit in my basement, was lookin at 300g's... damn my tiny house!). So that's the long winded story of how I got here, and even though I only have a couple small tanks, I'm well on my way to being a true mfker in such a short amount of time. ;)

i was always huge into fishing since i was 2.5 years old and still am and for xmas this year i thought i would buy my gf a 65g tank so i did and after about a week or so we decided it wasnt enough so now we have the 65, 2 30's and i just finished building a 150 all glass tank. i love fish keeping as does she and this forum has had a huge impact
