what'll happen? will it blow up, or crack or something? i would appreciate first hand experiences (or your friend's first hand experiences), i don't want people's guesses. thanks in advance

Bad things will happen....

Either the glass will shatter or the element will overheat and melt. Which happens first depends on the quality of the heater, but either way it's a bad thing. Also a significant chance that fire will be involved too.

Cheers

when I was moving fish tanks from my mother's house after college to my new house... my stepfather plugged in a heater that was sitting on the back plastic part of the tank. I came over a next week, and he said he smelled something from my room a few days back.... I go in and the heater had melted the lid and fell into the tank... thank god it did not kill my 3 baby zaire blue fronts...

A lot of things could happen depending on what type it is, but most likely the glass housing will shatter.

well last night when i was cleaning one of my empty tanks i left the heater on i forgot to unplug it and i when i did it was burning hot, sooo i set it down for a an hour it cooled down put it back in to the empty tank pluged it in, then when i put my hand in there to put some stuff in i got electrocuted it wasnt bad but scared me. so i dont know if that will happen but my heater was old and it was one i never heard of or seen befor.

I once let a heater run dry for 5 or so minutes, it got splashed by some cold water coming from the tap, and cracked instantly. We put all of our heaters on a switchable power bar by themselves so that when water changes come around a single flick of the switch turns off all our heaters and there are no problems.

id get a new one if it zapped you (whats to say now it wont zap your fish?). Heaters are made to be submerged, as they get VERY hot very quickly (almost instantly) and can burn you pretty bad. If you have any questions as to if its still good, just toss it and save yourself the pain of electrocuting your fish.. (and yourself again) lol
