What happens to them all

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Sadly I think alot of the time Motoro's seem to a person first step in to keeping rays and as iv seen other the years people are interested for the first few months then get feed up with the upkeep and just let the ray/fish slowly die, it's not only fish it's a said fact with most sort of pets, people just don't do there homework in keeping a animal before buying one.

You could ask the same question about any type of fish.Where are alll the oscars, arrow's,frontosa, etc, etc, etc. They are mostly dead.I've kept several individual fish alive for as long as 30+ years but most people think 2-3 years is a long time to keep a fish. I worked at a fish store some years back and many customers came in monthly to restock their near empty tanks. If it were not for all the people killing fish we would be up to our necks in them.

You are right you could ask the same of any fish

But a guppy or a neon don't live for 25 years and they are also happy to live in a 2ft tank there whole life

I'm not saying it about other fish that's why I posted it in the ray section
If I wanted to know what happens to red tail cats I would have posted in the catfish section

So are most rays kept stunted badly due to tank size as I have seen different types of ray Leo flower henlei pearl motoro in the mega tank in holland and they are by far the biggest rays of any type I have seen

What you also forget is most rays in public aquarium are mostly fish that have grown to large for people's tanks so are probably stunted

If someone has say a 6x2 tank he then grows the ray until its to big for him so he sells it to a guy with a 8x4 that guy then grows it until its to big for him at this point the people the guy with the 8x4 can sell the ray to are getting few and far between so what happens to them then as public aquariums can't take them all

Agree with T1, I do not think that "grow out" tanks work at all, it think they are "stunting" tanks for people who are kidding themselves in the majority, but not all, situations.

I bet that two equal rays would end up very different sizes if grown on in grow outs compared to a 10x4 or more, especially if you add in regular drip, water changes and quality food source.

I've bred 24 motoro pups in the last 1.5 years and have tried to keep a track on all of them but some of the guys that have bought rays from me just dont get back in touch or give updates even when i've asked for them so its difficult to say if they are all alive or not. I know that one of my pups died and that was down to the guy that bought her and i lost one myself because she had a bad start and was quite weak.
I have my adult pair that im moving on and hopefully i can be kept updated on their progress once in their new home.

-> Millions of motoro pups are sold world wide

Millions, really? if the number is true, this single species trade is a Billion dollar industry. Do you know what a Billion dollar industry look like?

Conclusion: Rays are not THAT popular; there are not millions to be traded. I would say maybe tens of thousands if even that.

How much do you think a shop pays for a wild caught motoro or retic

You can buy a retic for £49 in a LFS and nearly all LFS add 100% mark up

Loads of rays are sold and many don't even make it out of the LFS alive

So yes I would say millions world wide

Maybe it would be more accurate to say over 100,000 have been sold worldwide. If you were to factor 5000 per year and maybe 20 years of ray keeping (probable much more) and a life expectancy in excess of that then we would be looking at 100,000 imports over last 20 years. Many of these would breed over their life with between 2 and 18 pups each time.....so 100,000 imports could produce a lot of pups even if only a small percentage bred....if they all each import led to the production of a number you could get to a million in circulation.....unless a lot die!

In my opinion most of them just die, so far i bred 150+ (pearl, henlei, Leo, scobina, tiger, retic), i always tried to stay in touch with the new owners. 1/3 def died, i got this response, 1/3 is still alive, 1/3 no data.

Especially motoro are bought by People who start with rays or buy them because they look cute and are cheap. Every year i get lots of offers so get motoros or other rays, because they got too huge. I can imagine what happens to these rays when the owner finds no person who wants them.
