How about the story of a mother buying her kid a snakehead, which then turned out the be a arapaima gigas. Lack of research is a killer, unfortunate for the fish.

Haha, I remember that thread. Good times.

To the OP: I'd probably tell the person that it won't work and that I am going to exchange it for another fish or store credit.

haha...just throw them in and see what happens...sounds a lot like running an aquarium store
Your post is misleading to newbies. Don't forget that quarantine is a must.

It's why I have back up tanks just in case this happens but I already informed my family not to do that to me especially if I may not have the proper accommodations for a particular fish.

one of my buddies decided he'd give me a small 3in cichlid of some kind, nice and colorful.

it died in his bag which obviously was filled up with a breath of air (not oxygen)...

"damn...i heard it splashing around on the way to your house bro..."

i think it would have been fun for my little convict.

My family would never buy me any fish they think Iam crazy as is with 14 tanks  My friends do buy me gift certificates to the LFS which I love. :D

My husband brings me home gold fish from Walmart. I have told him 1,000 times not to buy fish from Walmart.

"Look what I got for you honey!, Isn't he cute?"

Well, I can't take them back to Walmart because they flush them..

So I will but them in a spare 10 gallon for a few days to treat them for IP's and then I will put them in one of my 20 gallons with my tetras.

I fatten them up (Usually coming from Walmart they look like hell)

I wait a couple weeks, until my husband looses interest. Then I will bag them up and take them to a local pet store that deals in pond fish a lot.

I donate them, but because it happens so often... usually whatever I buy, they take a couple dollars off, even if I haven't brought in any fish for weeks.

The last time this happened, my husband paid 4 dollars for the fish, and I made him look so nice that just a few weeks later the other pet store sold him for 14 dollars (and they usually under price their fish)

My husband does not notice because I have so many tanks going..he just figures I moved the fish.

I don't have the heart to tell my husband that I do not want the fish and that I cannot house them.....But I do tell him that if he want to buy me a fish, buy one for my schools like skirt tetras and glofish.....

But, He always comes home with a goldfish. Once, he did come home with a puffer...which started my puffer obsession :) So, that was good.

Purplecandle, you'll be surprised most of the goldfish forums I visit and mod regularly are 90% girls. How strange you don't want goldfish but to each, her own.:D

I'm just thankful the only gifted fish I ever recieved was a polypterus lapradei.
Other then that my family knows what I would want, in my tank... Not that they would buy me a fish as a present though, but they did get me store credit last christmas, I believe I got datnoids with it:D

my niece bought me glofish but i took them back to the store. i wont support genetic altering like that. its just as bad as dyed or tattooed fish in my eyes. i got a green spotted puffer once too and i had to explain that the store lied and it wasnt freshwater. i have had some cool fish as gifts tho. its how i got my first oscar.(but i got to pick him out. one of those i really like that one and my better half showed up the next day with it in a bag:D) and i got my breeder pair of jags as a gift. they didnt have their first spawn untill 4 months after i got them. the previous owner thought they were duds to breed so he gave them to me for my community on my bday. i got them their own tank to keep down aggression tho.
