What happens when someone gives you a fish for a gift?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
not quite a gift but, My Wife, ( who lets me be fish crazy, but couldn't be bothered herself) took my son to the lfs "just to look" and came back with a teeny little tiger oscar. Not only did I keep it, but after a 7 month growth spurt it was so easy to convince her ($) we needed an upgraded tank,400g, that I will always hold a special space in my heart and tank for HER Oscar.

all my tanks are planted, and my mum thinks silver dollars are amazing....
i'm waiting for it...
but i may get a new tank out of it :)

My husband brings me home gold fish from Walmart. I have told him 1,000 times not to buy fish from Walmart.

"Look what I got for you honey!, Isn't he cute?"

Well, I can't take them back to Walmart because they flush them..

So I will but them in a spare 10 gallon for a few days to treat them for IP's and then I will put them in one of my 20 gallons with my tetras.

I fatten them up (Usually coming from Walmart they look like hell)

I wait a couple weeks, until my husband looses interest. Then I will bag them up and take them to a local pet store that deals in pond fish a lot.

I donate them, but because it happens so often... usually whatever I buy, they take a couple dollars off, even if I haven't brought in any fish for weeks.

The last time this happened, my husband paid 4 dollars for the fish, and I made him look so nice that just a few weeks later the other pet store sold him for 14 dollars (and they usually under price their fish)

My husband does not notice because I have so many tanks going..he just figures I moved the fish.

I don't have the heart to tell my husband that I do not want the fish and that I cannot house them.....But I do tell him that if he want to buy me a fish, buy one for my schools like skirt tetras and glofish.....

But, He always comes home with a goldfish. Once, he did come home with a puffer...which started my puffer obsession :) So, that was good.

How can your husband not understand the 1,000x message of a) no goldfish and b) no Walmart fish? Kind of scary...

It happened to me. My friend got me a red devil for my bday not knowing how aggressive this fishes are. Not having extra tanks at the time, I had to put him in my 240 gal tank housed with 2 gars, 8 different bichirs, 1 pacman, 1 dat, and 1 wolf fish. Five minutes after releasing him he started picking on my wolf, by the next day it seem like he was trying to kill him. So I ended up selling the red devil, Aldo he did stand out in the tank and I would have keep him but he was just mean from the beginning

I think he does understand the no fish from Walmart...but he sees a cute/sick one and wants to rescue

oh i almost forgot, when my moms classroom tank upgraded from a 10 to a 30, one of her students showed up the next day, while the tank was cycling, with a little baby red finned shark, a dozen danios, and a pair of dwarf gouramis. at the time my tank( a 30) had 3 bala sharks(also gifts) a clown knife, and a pair of pictus catfish, and a dozen glow light tetras. so i then had a dozen danios and a pair of dwarf gouramis, not to mention the shark. the next day i was down to 3 glow light tetras, all the danios where gone, and the dwarf gouramis had no scales. but the red finned shark lived in there for nearly 4 years before he jumped and the cat ate him. my moms tank seems to get new gifts yearly from students, and they are everything from the ones i just mentioned, to some black phantom longfin tetras, a baby(1.5") dojo loach, and numerous others that can be a little pricey(for a community tank, and as gifts to a school teacher) the dojo is still there, and eats most of the new gifts( he is 4 years old) and now this year she got 1 giant danio, becuase "it look funny in the store, so i got it for you" gotta love 5th graders
