How does conditioning (how a fish is brought up) relate to starving it?
this has nothing to do about that. wasnt comparing it to that. was stating that not all pacu will hunt and eat oscars, tetras, barbs...

bring it up by not feeding it like it should be and it will. i've had oscars that wouldn't touch feeders that i threw in the tank cause they werent accustomed to it.

edit...
oh BTW i bought a EBJD at 1.5" about 3 months ago and just took him to a good LFS a few days ago at 3". the LFS that i bought him from still has his bro's and sis's. they are about 1.675". i would say thats about every 3-4 days feeding probably more. and i don't go there no more.

it should be noted that skipping one day of feeding didn't turn the pacu into a blood thirsty beast.

chances are that if he ate the day before he would have eaten the cichlid anyway.

missing the meal was likely just coincidence. nothing more.

fish like pacu eat and eat. their brain rarely says "hey I am full I'm not going to eat that"

they don't function that way.

my 18"er could eat all day if you sat there feeding it. heck, my 3 inch lemon fins barbs eat massive amounts of tetra cichlid sticks and they are only 3 inches long. they eat and eat and eat..

the fact that the fish was eaten after a skipped meal was nothing more than coincidence. the two events are not related.

the pacu would have eaten the cichlid whether he missed a meal or not.

the right opportunity presented itself to the pacu and he took it. thats what happens when very big fish are placed with smaller fish. sometimes they get eaten.

From my experience......My 2 pacu that were close to 2' were kept in a 750g tank and fed a variety of fruits, veggies, pellets, nuts etc but never feeders. One of them more than the other would attempt to eat small fish. I tend to over feed if anything so it was not out of starvation or probably even hunger (they were kept fat lol) but seemed more instintual.

Sorry about your loss.

my 2.5 foot pacus get really aggressive when i forget to feed them. they almost killed one of my RTC/TSN hybrids in the pond when i missed ONE day of feeding.

How did i cure the injuries???? NO not medicine....i just fed my pacus twice a day till they couldnt eat anymore. this gave time for my catfish to make a full recovery. pacu r indeed aggro fish. sorry for ure loss

Thats not normal for pacu.. how long did they go without a meal... sorry for your loss..do you normally feed your pacu live food..

I only feed them pellets, fruits and veggies. The guy I got them from was into giving them the occasiuonal feeder.
I feed them on a Friday afternoon, forgot Saturday , and was back out to the shop to feed them Sunday afternoon.
