I know the Blood Parrot cichlid is frowned upon by many, but where did it exactly derive from?

It kinda looks like a red devil X severum..

Does anybody exactly know?

I think sev and RD aswell, I stand by my right of owning a blood parrot, I won't again but Fred is cool lol

There's loads of conflicting info on how to keep these, I keep mine with other cichlids mainly SA, websites will state they can live in a community tank or with palnts and not harm them....but they act semi-aggressive and they say they will get to 5-6inch, Fred is at least 9inch and about 3 inch thick.

Huh. How long have you have Fred for? My guess is that it must be kinda hard for them to eat, figuring they have a mouth that is constantly open therefor im assuming they don't live very long...I could be completely wrong and have never owned one so I'm curious.

I've owned mine for a little over a year, and it was maybe a bit over 6 months when I got it from the LFS, the LFS has kept one for a little over 3 or 4 years. Many online report having theirs for over 10 years.

A good number of the BP's do NOT live this long due to complications with their anatomy. But there is many who can.

Most of the websites about BP's I've read about them being peaceful has been just wrong for me. I keep mine with CA cichlids, it eats feeder guppies, she will attack firemouths she deems out of line, and can actually shut her mouth. She takes pellets from my hand, and will on occassion nip my hand when I move rocks or wood around.

I've always assumed it was a RD/Midas x Who Knows...

Hm very interesting. I'm surprised she can eat feeder guppies and let alone shut the mouth. Do they get as big as a RD/Midas? How big is yours at little over a year old?

Ok Fred is 4 years old, SHE can't open her mouth but you make changes by cutting food up small making sure there's lots to go around and they do pretty well with live food they sorta suck it than bite it.
