What is a good fish treat?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I just started a worm bin, well kinda. I bought worms to go fishing a wee ago but did not use them all.
I put them in a bucket with leaves and I put just a little food scraps in there. It is a week later and they are alive at least.
Not sure exactly what I need to do...
Google I guess... ?

If you live in a very warm climate a worm heap would be more trouble than it's worth. They need to be kept moist at all times, if they start to dry out the worms just burrow back down into the earth where they came from. Living in the uk I don't need to worry about the moist bit, our weather sorts that out!

The next most important part is to keep them well fed, otherwise they will burrow back down into the earth just like if the heap dries out. I find old newspapers, food scraps, grass and plant cuttings keep them from burrowing away. With Halloween just passing I threw on the kids (and mine:naughty:) pumpkins all chopped up.

And as long as it's moist and well fed every shovel full of gunk out of it will be plastered in worms. During winter I stop feeding and they all disappear, until the next spring when I start feeding again. And the worms come a running.

I’ve kept a worm bin going for about a year now. It has come in very handy in a few situations that have come up.

Don’t feed them meat products- they don’t eat that. I tried feeding them old fish food pellets and they got all moody and gross, didn’t see the worms even touch it. Avoid citrus fruits, the acids can foul your bin. Lots of different veggies, coffee grounds, crushed egg shells help their gut loads. My red wigglers seem to go bananas for banana peels. Lol.

Sometimes I take my compost bin and throw all these items into a food processor with a bit of water. They breed like crazy when you do that.

Also make sure you have a fair amount of ventilation or else it can develop a smell and or fruitflys.

Ghost shrimp is what I feed my mayan cichlid. I only do this once a week or no more than twice a week. I think that most fish love them and they have lots of nutrients including the color enhancing stuff. I am still learning but my fish loves to eat live food so I will give him those only one or two small enough for him to eat whole once a week/Max twice a week for me.

a word on keeping worms,
earthworms eat soil
composting worms eat leaves and vegetables
i have a 3 5g bucket set up with compost worms for my little acaras.
i also made a worm getter for my yard as I know theres no chemical use.

Wow! Great info. I never thought this post would end up encouraging me to raise worms. (Something I have always wanted to do, but I did not think I need worms, but I do!
I guess I need composting worms, not earth worms... Hummmmm
I found this site. Uncle Jim's Worm Farm.
My wife is just going to love this idea. I bet she would block this site if she could!

those are what I use. bought 500 multiplied quickly. they only get about 2-3 inches full grown and are very slender. wiggle like crazy, my fish love them.
this is their home.

I cannot believe I never hear of a worm getter!
I gotta make me one those!
Just what I needed.... another project
I don't really post a lot, but I am sure glad I finally posted this question.

Tried my hand at a worm bin a couple years back. Started with 100 uncle jims wrigglers in a bin, put all my compost and whatnot in there. For whatever reason they just didnt seem to multiply. Though it may have been that demand overran supply with several hungry growing cichlids at the time...

Some treats I used to give to my cichlids were live guppies, live shrimp (neocaridina davidi), snails, nightcrawlers, crickets, crawfish, and hellgrammites
