What is a good wet pet?

Oscars have a healthy growth rate, but its turned into this silly myth that oscars will have these unfathomable growth spurts and its some kind of non-compatible scary menace. In the end its easily dealt with through more common sense and less godzilla like panic.

I plan on adding a gold oscar with my ebjd, severum and chocolate. I just hope he doesnt burst my tank while Im at work, maybe I better lock the fish food cabinet just in case.

No one is saying they are menacing. ..i think they are actually mild mannered compared to CA cichlids and some SA's.

But the fact is they do grow faster than ebjds and allot of other cichlids.

Please inform us on the more common sense that pertains to this situation ?

I have an Oscar and and regular jd. I've never kept ebjd. I can tell you Oscars out grow just about anything. The 1st 6 months my Oscar reached 8 inches opposed to the jd reaching almost 4 in 6 months. Even starting an Oscar at 1 inch and the ebjd at 3 the Oscar will still make the jd a snack.

Get 180 and a breeding pair of black nasties or 125 with breeding cubans. Both are beautiful looking fish.

Aggressive yet outgoing. You can't go wrong with an amphilophus. I personally like hoogaborum or trimacs. If you just want to run down to the store grab a red devil if you want more exotic pure breds look at some reputable breeders.

Dovii are great but they can be an absolute handful. I have a little istlanum I ordered that is every bit as interactive as any amphilophus I've had and is as a aggressive as they come.

Yeah, a red devil is an awesome choice and Rapps always has nice ones.

You could keep a female Trimac in a 75g and they look just as stunning as the males, only with black in their dorsal fin.

I don`t get why that guy is getting so butthurt about oscars growth rates. Anyone here who has ever owned an oscar (theres a lot of us) can tell you that they grow insanely fast and are adept at gorging themselves on food. EBJDs on the other hand are well documented to grow slowly. add this to the fact that oscars will routinely eat any fish that fits in their mouth, and you have a very obvious problem.
Nobody is trying to make out oscars to be incompatible fish but it just seems like growing these 2 fish out together would either be such a chore and require a lot of effort, or end badly.

I used to have a 10" female Mayan cichlid and she was a real beast, glass banger and would kill anything I put near her. I kept her solo in a 90g and she was a very fun fish to own.

My vote would probably go to either cuban or an Amphilophus species, you can pick up some beastly Midevils at Petsmart if youre patient enough to grow them out.

Rapps has trimacs....one of the best looking cichlids imo

Im not so butthurt about growth rates, I got my first oscar in '88 so Im not unfamiliar but what gets me is this panic about it like it cant be managed or dealt with.

If you like a Trimac take a look at lyonsi.
