I see people refer to their main tank as a grow out tank because they plan on upgrading in the future. I always thought this but never said anything. That crap is not a grow out tank. It is your main and largest tank. You are not growing fish out, you have fish that live in a small tank.

I consider a grow out tank, a tank to grow out fish for a tank that is already in the persons possession. I have a 265 gallon native tank with catfish that will eat pretty large fish. So I have a 20 gallon tank with some sunfish fry to grow them out so they can be added to my 265 and not be eaten.

My 20 gallon is a grow out tank for my 265. Now if I shut my 265 down and sell it I wouldn't consider my 20 a grow out. This is because I am not growing the fish out so I can add them to a larger tank. I would say I plan on upgrading soon, but calling it a grow out is misleading.

Haha that's funny and very true.

I agree now that I have a 600 here to set up. I was one of those I will upgrade soon and finally realized I was in over my head and bought a tank to upgrade.... but it still looks small
I am growing out a dorado for D davenmandy if he likes it or not the man gave me a good deal and the one i was looking after for him comitied suicide

what if you have tanks in storage, at friends houses, under construction, down for maintenance, or awaiting arrival? What if I had a fish in a 300g I was growing out to house it w/ it's mate in a 125g and it CAN NOT be w/ it's mate until it's bigger?

Everything isn't always so cut-and-dry. Everything has grey areas. Sounds like someone just had a bad day at the office.

I think its bc most people say they will upgrade and that their current tank is a "grow out"......but they never do and they know they arent going to.....they simply say it not to get flaged bc their fish are in too small of a tank.

I think it kinda depends on what the person already has too. If they have a 55 gallon and talk about getting a 300 gallon that's quite a leap. A person with a 200 or so saying their going to get a 300 or bigger isn't much of a leap as they already most likely have the proper equipment to make that leap just need a new tank and have shown their willing to invest decent amounts of money into an aquaria.

I did it... When I got into Cichla I started with a 75g growout tank and 3 months later had a 125g, about 7 months after that a 180g and a year later I had a 300g. Not everyone fits that stereotype.
