What is a growout tank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I see people refer to their main tank as a grow out tank because they plan on upgrading in the future. I always thought this but never said anything. That crap is not a grow out tank. It is your main and largest tank. You are not growing fish out, you have fish that live in a small tank.

I consider a grow out tank, a tank to grow out fish for a tank that is already in the persons possession. I have a 265 gallon native tank with catfish that will eat pretty large fish. So I have a 20 gallon tank with some sunfish fry to grow them out so they can be added to my 265 and not be eaten.

My 20 gallon is a grow out tank for my 265. Now if I shut my 265 down and sell it I wouldn't consider my 20 a grow out. This is because I am not growing the fish out so I can add them to a larger tank. I would say I plan on upgrading soon, but calling it a grow out is misleading.

I believe you are referring to an out grow tank....a tank that the fish out grow....grow out...out grow....gets confusing to newbies :)

That's funny Pacu Mom. A refreshing play on words but when I think about it, it's potato-potahto to me :)

Cu455 has a point IMHO. A bit grouchily articulated but valid. Frank lists exceptions but they only confirm that there is a rule.

My point is: who are the judges? When someone calls their tank a growout or an outgrow, I don't care. I don't give it a second thought. They can call it a fish hood, a frying pan, a Nissan, or Jessica.

Until they ask me what I think about it (or what they can improve or what they may be doing wrong, what causes their fish problems, etc.), I don't think about it, neither do I volunteer a "healthy, humane, and friendly critique with the best of intentions from the very cockles of my humanity-and-everything-alive-loving heart".

Well, I try. Sometimes I eat my words. They taste awful, like my stinky foot or a dumpster field crow...

In a nutshell: There is a golden medium in displaying love for fish and displaying love for fellow homo sapiens. It's a thin line and we will always sway to the left and to the right but if we intend to stay on that line, IMHO that's all that matters.

I've met a plethora of unfortunate, self-righteous and ardent animal lovers that took this good deed so far (every good deed can be spoiled) that they became in my view people-haters. Speaking proverbially, they are straining a gnat but swallow a camel. By their fruit one will recognize them.

Some people keep fish for life, others until next week when something else captures their fancy. Some form emotional attachments to their fish, while for others the fish is an acquisition to trade, barter sell when something better comes along. I like my car, but when I decide I want something else, I won't bat an eye to get rid of it. I can see people relating to their fish like I do my cars. The good thing is that there is room in this hobby for all of us....those of us who are in it for the long haul, and those bright lights with all their enthusiasm who are here today but will be gone in a few months. Let's face it, the majority of people, including fish keepers generally do not view their fish pets the same way as their cat and dog pets.

Agreed, Pacu Mom! Like your analogies. That is the reality, like it or not.

Confused me a bit w/ that one....maybe I need coffee

A bit is something you can overcome, Frank. I believe in you. Contact me when you are thoroughly and irreversibly confounded, dumbfounded, or otherwise founded ;) (Yanking your chain for my selfish fun).

I think this aimed for people that buy red tail cats and put them in 55 gallon grow outs. It's not going to spend much time in that 55 gallon before it needs a much bigger tank, ya know.

I would think that a grow out tank should last a while. Enough time to purchase the permanent tank. I can see his point.
