What is a growout tank?

I've met a plethora of unfortunate, self-righteous and ardent animal lovers that took this good deed so far (every good deed can be spoiled) that they became in my view people-haters. Speaking proverbially, they are straining a gnat but swallow a camel. By their fruit one will recognize them.
There was a recent thread that i won't bother to mention but a certain member here expressed his love for the hobby & his fish but lets just say he doesn't always get things right. The following responses he got where just a little disturbing if you ask me, from threats to never speak to him again to banning him from this site.
This resulted in this so-called Heathen to somehow retract his words & grovel his way back to acceptance. I was gob smacked myself & would of given these "do gooders" a strongly worded uppercut if it were me on the receiving end of their radicalism.
Some people need to calm down & realise this is a hobby that people of differing ages, skills & morals can all enjoy & if they are coming to this web site to ask questions it means they are coming here to broaden their knowledge & learn the does & don'ts of fish keeping, not to get cut down & demoralised.

I met someone at the fish store today who wanted a 2nd Oscar for their tank. I proceeded to ask "What type of fish do you have?'' and he said "A 6" Oscar a 6" Convict and a Channel cat and we're looking for a new Pleco cuz ours died".

Naturally thinking "Pleco", 1st thing that came to my mind was "Bulldog" so I pointed them to the Bulldog/Rubberlips while telling them it is a smaller Pleco reaching 4-6" and asked "what size tank are your fish in?" and they said it's a 10 gallon.

true story. JUST HAPPENED. I then proceeded to tell them I also had an Oscar in a 10g wen I was 9 or 10 and it jumped out of the tank due to ______________ (insert choice of many reasons). I recommended at least a 40BR but said a 55g would be better while they looked at a 20L like it was just invented and said "big tanks are too expensive"

If that 10gal was a grow out tank then that would be acceptable ; ). Really, you can lead a moron to facts but you can't make them think. If people don't want to spend a "fortune" on a 55gal then they should keep the appropriate fish.

they even made mention of the "$-per-gallon" sale at Petco recently. $55 is quite the fortune.

It doesn't matter, the point is people are getting their fishy advice from places like Petco which is why you see Oscars in 10 gal tanks in the first place, Then when you give them appropriate advice they don't want to hear it cause Petcos advice is the cheaper option.
