What is a growout tank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Tbh if you have a tank large enough to house them in future then a small tank is a great idea to help grow them.

But not having a plan to upgrade is no good. Saying you have a tank that is too small and not meeting the rrequirements is useless. Keeping the fish in a small growout tank is PATHETIC and animal cruelty, especially if you just dont care!

I would say only buy fish that grow large, IE Oscars if you have a setup or money set aside to house the fish long term.

If someone has a multitude of problematic events like pacu mom pacu mom then I understand as long as the fish gets into a large home as soon as you can get it going.

I was tempted to buy an oscar for my 68Gal, but I thought it would be cruel to keep a wasteful fish in more than 30 gals less than it should be because I am busy and cant do multiple large WC a week.

Thank god in south africa we dont have chain stores (walmart etc) that are promoting animal cruelty. The fish shops are few but they know what their doing and hold oscars and only stock tank busters on order to prevent these issues.

Rant over and thats just my 2c

They hold oscars in big tanks **

I met someone at the fish store today who wanted a 2nd Oscar for their tank. I proceeded to ask "What type of fish do you have?'' and he said "A 6" Oscar a 6" Convict and a Channel cat and we're looking for a new Pleco cuz ours died".

Naturally thinking "Pleco", 1st thing that came to my mind was "Bulldog" so I pointed them to the Bulldog/Rubberlips while telling them it is a smaller Pleco reaching 4-6" and asked "what size tank are your fish in?" and they said it's a 10 gallon.

true story. JUST HAPPENED. I then proceeded to tell them I also had an Oscar in a 10g wen I was 9 or 10 and it jumped out of the tank due to ______________ (insert choice of many reasons). I recommended at least a 40BR but said a 55g would be better while they looked at a 20L like it was just invented and said "big tanks are too expensive"

The beauty is that you and I have no responsibility to teach or help anyone in the hobby if they don't want it. But we absolutely do have the responsibility to be nice to our neighbor, including a fellow hobbyist.

And if they do ask for help, you and I can tactfully say what we think and move on. Whether they follow what you say or don't is their primal, sacred right to choose that must be respected. Few things leave a more foul taste in the mouth than when someone forces their opinion down someone else's throat via hijacking and assigning authority to their self-righteous and self-justified selves. It's hideous.

This does not mean that one must never open their mouth first. They should not if they know they won't be able to stop in time. A hint, a remark can be made and if there ensues no reaction, no further intrusion would be justified usually imho.

When we are put in a position of authority, then this changes. Also, perhaps, when the animal cruelty laws take onto fish, this may change (but just a tweak, imho) too.

no worries there, can,nt even get a piece of penny candy for 2 cents any more.

within two months of my first 29g being bought it became a grow out tank for 2 55g and a 75g.... now the 75g is a grow out for the 125g. I hope it someday will be a grow out for a much bigger tank. I just buy what fits in what I have at the time myself. ( why I still do not have a gar or arrowana or the bigger breeds of bichir)

I do feel a lot of people seem to like climbing up on a very tall horse at times though. Most people learn from their mistakes and those that do not are not going to learn any faster for being called a blithering idiot. They are more likely to just not listen or be more stubborn for it.

As for the no smoking frank and jaws I wish you luck I quit cigarettes 9 years ago when my son was born. Used a combination of patches and sugar free hard candy. kept my occasional cigar till 3 months ago when my employer required me to quit or get a 30% increase to my insurance.

I find it amusing when you see some of those people on the high horse arent keeping their fish in the same conditions they are bashing others for.

+1 on people learning from their mistakes.

Wow 30%increase for continuing to smoke smh
