What is a Monsterfish?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It is the obsession itself for sure. I used to keep C.A. cichlids exclusively. Jags, Dovi, Beani etc. Then I realized I didn't have to limit myself only to fish that would kill each other when I turned my back. Now I am obsessed with Hillstream fish and barbs. I would never have though that after 40 plus years I would end up keeping loaches and barbs. I still love to see the big nasty stuff but it is no longer for me.

I've discovered the same recently. I have a 30 gallon planted with snails and crabs, it's incredible, my favorite tank.

Are we talking monster fish or monster fish keeper?

If monster fish, I'd say any fish that is a pain in the butt to keep qualifies. Guppies need not apply, though they are monsters in their own way (did you know that sub-dominant males rape the females?)

If monster fish keeper, my definition is anyone that takes some aspect of fish keeping to the extreme. Big tanks, lots of tanks, lots of fish, big fish, mean fish, super expensive fish, the rarest of the rare... etc. That might not be the tag line when you sign up for the site, but that's the definition I'm working with.

Guppies are PITA to keep alive

I don't qualify then but I have Serious MTS at least

I believe it's whatever fish you have a monster obsession or love for and cannot go w/o having one in your tank.

OK, I get it. Perception is reality. If I believe I am male, then I am male. If I believe I am black, than I am black. If I believe my fish are monster fish, then they are monster fish. I am not obsessed by fish, therefore, my fish are not monster and I am not a monster fish keeper.

Anything that won't fit in a 150.
By your definition, my fish are monster.

Your definition is what the MFK welcome page states....my fish may be monster, and I may be a monster fish keeper after all.....
