i dont know it. but a cubic foot of media is rediculousily bigger then what can go in the fx5.

in saltwater, the rule for effective refugium filtration was 10% of display tank volume
 
ok. I think i will have a go at adding a sump to my 5ft tank instead of a FX5. Just have to think how to design the sump and also how to create a wet/dry sump.

Not as far as im aware but obviously the bigger the better so you can fit more stuff in there and have more water in the sump but where are you planning on putting the sump?

Do you have a room or cupboard behind the tank or do you have enough space under your tank?

the easiest way would be to buy a regular aquarium. make a acrylic cube for biomedia. the cube will have pegs on the side that sits on the top of the tank. so its above water level. the cube will have eggcrate light diffuser on the bottom. us a drip tray to spread the water.

then in the rest the aquarium you can have plants. and on the end away from the cube put the return pump. us either eggcrate or drill acrylic to prevent anachris from being sucked into the pump

I can't put it on top of the tank the lid is not strong and have shelves above the tank.

Would i have to drill a whole in my tank to pump the water into the sump? i ges i have to put a pump in the tank to push the water down to the tank.

no the cube pegs sit on top of the sides of the sump tank.

you could buy a overflow box there kinda pricy. there are a couple of diy overflow pipes that dont require drilling.

its design allows it to keep siphon even when the power goes out.
there or a couple variations of this.

Ahh i understand what u mean about the cube.

Sorry i am finding it hard to understand what you mean by the overflow from the link. Is the overflow pipe the intake pipe for my sump?

Do you mean it piggy backs of the out take pipe for my canister fliter and goes into the sump?
