WHAT IS IN MY FX5!!!?????!!!!!

Okay. I think I figured out why there was dead water in the FX5. I do believe it was the forgotten filter pad. When I completely dismantled it and took out all the biomaterial, there I saw a very clogged nasty filter pad. I swear it laughed and said "NOOB!" at me when I exposed it. Since the filter actually only bonus filtration on this system, I really hadn't noticed that it wasn't flowing well. Anyways, I fired it back up last night, and its running well. I think I've fixed my mistake. Thanks for all your help people! I'll update on if I have any further break outs and whether or not I should have done more than hot water and letting it dry out.

I swear those fine pads should be illegal

Very interesting thread great input 12 volt and Kdrun and Wet whiskers. I can only hope when I have an issue arise that I get such quality feedback in the future.

I'm glad you found that pad.
I was going to suggest it might be the cat's stirring up the sand and getting sucked in the filter till it can't run efficiently no more.

Agreed. These x-tra fine polishing pad's are a terrible investment. Unless you want to tear your filter down and clean them weekly, if not daily, if not hourly...

I agree with the cyanobacteria verdict. I have had some bad blooms in a saltwater tank before. If I disturbed the stuff it would release little bubbles of hydrogen sulfide (fun stuff). I have never seen it in neon green, but apparently that is one of the many possibilities. Mine was always reddish (cyan?) colored.

Cyan is a blueish green color similar to tooth paste (back before it turned into tooth gels with stripes and sparkly things in it). But cyanobacteria also comes in a purpilish color.

Yep, I guess it is more purplish than red. Any way you look at it, it is pretty nasty stuff.
