What is my first pike?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It was a cute and begging to be bought, working in the store i know my customers would never be able to keep it so took pity on, though that how i got most of my fish

So is this going to end up like a common alta when it grow or is this a colour variation of alta and will turn out different than the adults i have seen.

If it came from Peru I doubt it is alta. Alta come from Guyana which is hell and far gone from Peru by several hundreds of miles.

My first thought was anthurus. They come from Peru, have the reddish suborbital eye marking and the markings on the dorsal of your fish look just like my female's.

I'm excited to see that anthurus may be trickling into the hobby again but was bummed when I saw you were in Canada. My female really needs a hot date.

mine doesnt have such a defined ocelli as yours but maybe thats cos its young. But the spangles on its flanks throw me.

Yours appears to be a male. :) Scats is a female. Males generally have more spangling than females.

This is why I detest IDing Saxatilis pikes...lol. Anthurus was my first thought, but I seconded guessed myself and thought alta. Its still very possible its alta. The charachteristics look strongly alta. The slightly occellated humeral blotch ABOVE the lateral line, slight spangling on the side. Intense red suborbital mark. I dunno, this is really a debatable one...lol The thing that throws the biggest hitch is the suggested locality of collection. Anthurus are from Peru mainly, alta from Guyana...

how rare are they?

Don't know about in Canada, but here in the states anthurus and alta are not imported on a regular basis. They are some of the more desireable of the Saxatilis pikes. I personally think that anthurus is the best looking of the Saxatilis, but thats just me. :)

As Jer mentioned, males have more spangling whereas females have few to no spots. The humeral spot is also more well defined on females.

see the resemblance to mine?
