It's not like I make this stuff up. lol

Honestly, I couldn't give a flying fig what anyone feeds their fish, and I seldom even waste my time posting in these types of discussions anymore because some people are simply too dense to understand, but when you used the term "garbage" I thought that it might be time for a little a reality check.

The following exert is from the from Alaska Science and Technology Foundation, which state:

"Crews supplies the processors with totes so they can dispose of the fish heads and carcasses as they clean and gut the fish. The processors, Crews said, are more than happy to get rid of the byproduct because it saves them the time and cost of grinding and dumping the waste. Once back in his plant, Crews grinds the remains of salmon, cod and other species into a slurry with vitamins and other ingredients to produce one of the fastest selling flake fish food on the market today"

The owner of Omega (Dennis Crews) has admitted same, even going so far as to compare this as being the same process as making hot dogs.

In terms of people food most of the sandwich meat you eat as well as probably all of the hot dog and sausage in the supermarkets use chicken and turkey heads and frames and other meat scraps as the main ingredients.

Feel free to carry on, without me ...........

In other words, you don't have an answer.

At the time of the argument you link to, NLS' list began with "Whole Antarctic Krill Meal, Whole Herring Meal, Wheat Flour, Whole Squid Meal." The "meal" part justified your "dry weight" argument.

However, NLS' list now begins with Whole Antarctic Krill and Whole Herring, which does not support your "dry weight" argument.

Sorry, I must be one of those who are "too dense" to understand your wisdom.

LOL, not quite. I simply get tired of debating this topic with those that lack a thorough understanding of the subject, and toss around terms such as "garbage", to describe one the of the best foods currently on the market. There are plenty of threads that you can search if you seek more answers.

NLS has always, as in for approx 20 yrs now, listed everything on their labels on a dry weight basis. Their Whole Antarctic Krill, and Whole Herring, have always been in a dried meal form.

Let me guess, in your mind fish meal is garbage, but fish processing plant waste later dried during the cooking/extrusion process is superior in nutrient value, and bioavailablity?

Typical misinformed consumer mentality ..........

For pellets, when comparing the ingredients, Dianichi is garbage compared to Omega One Super Color Cichlid Pellets.

Unfortunately, NLS' list starts with "Typical Ingredients"<--- which sounds like garbage too.

What. It's white fish meal, most use fish meal. It's super processed. If you think they're sitting there wood smoking salmon to dump into $3.99 a bottle Petco Omega 1 fish food, you're probably incorrect. Dianichi Ultima has very simiar ingredients, but has half the fat and more protein. Not that that's always necessarily a good thing...

Dianichi uses calcium montmorillonite clay for a bonding agent. This has been proven to "nuetralize metabolic toxins," but only by acting as a laxative. Dianichi argues that this equates into a more easily digestable food. I don't know about that, it could just be the high garlic content. I just know that the food has a "oily run-off" like NLS, which supposedly is a sign of the omega-3 content. Also, I've used all of them - and although Dianichi is pricey, the fish freaking love it. If they are getting ANY dianichi at all ,they will turn their noses up at the other food until I offer up more of the good stuff.

I'm not the only one to notice this. This link from cichlid forum shows Dianichi products being ranked the highest repetitively down the board. If you read the other user reviews you'll notice others that have made the same observation.

Here goes a LONG discussion on this forum debating whether Dianichi or NLS was better - full of outrageous claims, fanboys, and your-momma jokes.
http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?214702-Dainichi-vs-NLS-Let-s-have-a-real-discussion-on-which-is-best!

As far as the OP's original question regarding color... I don't think any of them make a difference to be honest. There was an ongoing joke about the before-after pictures that one of the sites had of a bunch of fish who were given their product. The fish looked much better afterwards, but they also had black backgrounds, black substrate, and noticeably different lighting : P.

All this being said, I have two huge buckets of NLS Thera-A in my fish room right now, sitting there smelling horrible. I like it a lot, just prefer Dianichi because the fish seem to like it better. But fat kids love cake and turn their noses up at broccoli - so, again. Who knows.

My red devil gets NLS- the jumbo pellets and he is still a youngster! He absolutely loves it, but he just ignores frozen brine shrimp?

MY other tanks house convicts, and I feed them cichlid gold, and the youngsters get crushed up Omega 1 flakes.

So I called Jeff Rapps and asked him, because I'm bored.

Jeff says he's not crazy about NLS - not because of the nutrition of the food, but because it's messy when working with as much fish/water as he is. Which, to be fair, Dianichi is exactly the same way. It doesn't smell as awful, but it is messy.

He had no opinion on Dianichi, he was familiar with it but hadn't tried it.

Jeff recommends Xtreme Pellets, and uses this food for his personal tanks. I'll give it a try next time I order, they have a nice chart setup showing they and their competetitors ingredients, digestable proteins, fats, etc. Looks like pretty good stuff...

What. It's white fish meal, most use fish meal. It's super processed.

Dianichi does list meal, it also follows with with wheat germ and wheat flour. NLS and Omega do not list meal. My comment was about the ingredients lists, and while I definitely shouldn't have said garbage, comparing only the current ingredients list puts Omega ahead IMO. Again, I shouldn't have said garbage. I've been going through this with dog food for years, but I'm always learning too.

What. It's white fish meal, most use fish meal. It's super processed. If you think they're sitting there wood smoking salmon to dump into $3.99 a bottle Petco Omega 1 fish food, you're probably incorrect.

I have no misconceptions on how all of these foods are made. I've actually preferred to feed raw stuff soaked in vitamins over anything found in a pet shop, but again, I'm learning and this thread is about pellets. Based on the experience here, it sounds like I've been wooped :).

I won't argue fish nutrition as I am not versed on the subject; but I would be skeptical of any conversation of any retail/online store promoting a food. They probably like it because they get it for free in returns of a little advertising here and there. Not sure if that is the case for Rapps or not, but I know for a fact it happens.
