I havn't tryed one of the air pump models. I'd Still be using the mag 350 except that I no longer have it. We have freshwater clams in all of the tanks that keep the substrait clean and mixed up. I just do a light vac with the hose when doing water changes and thats it.

would that work for a massive waste load piranha tank?

on all my tanks i am done doing a gravel vac before i am done with my water change. i just use a Python to do my water changes . i don't even connect it to the faucet till i am ready to fill, put the hose outside this gives more flow rate in . good luck

Thats not necessarily true, unless you have low water pressure at your house. I use mine connected to the hose outside, and that thing sucks/pulls hard. I would just recommend using a regular vacuum you might as well just change some water while you are at it.

At present I use a syphon gravel vac and use this to do water changes too, however i am still not really happy with the flow rate as the are some BIG pleco mess that struggles to get up the syphon. Is there like an electric hose i can use to increase the flow and strength of the Vacume?

I don't think my 5HP wet dry shop vac could beat the common Pleco turd mountain! Damn I hate my three Pleco's SO BAD.

Serious question, is there really a gravel vacuum in existence that removes Pleco poop from you average sized (5 - 10 MM) aquarium gravel? I am not certain that is is possible (Pleco poop removal) from gravel <10MM without also sucking up the gravel itself.

In reality, a wet/ dry shop vac can be used extremely effectively for water changes if rigged up for this purpose, but gravel cleaning would require at minimum large sized pond rock.

I have an Eheim battery powered vac that was given with a 20 gallon tank i bought. I used it a few times on various tanks. You can submerge it completely under water. It is not very powerful but it does the job. I personally don't really use it b/c like most people said, i use a standard gravel vac so I can do a WC at the same time.

Have the same one...I use it just for spot cleaning and it works great..not super powerful, but does its job well and is easy to take apart and clean...and sand doesn't hurt it so that's a bonus

I never really understood the reasoning behind the battery or air driven vacuums. While gravel vac'ing this way removes waste in the gravel (which is good), it does nothing for the water quality. You might as well do a water change with a gravel vac. It's more benfical to the fish beacause changing your water will dilute out the nitrates. ;)

Just for spot cleaning really. I hit my 6' and 8' midweek just for aesthetic reasons. I also house quite a few plecos too.

I use the Ehiem and its great for a quick vac. No replacement for water changes but its cheaper than running powerheads in the hopes waste makes it to the filter. 10 minutes a week fixes that.
