That reminds me of some green nylon-ish fiber fill that I got from a throw pillow. It didn't polish the water at all (gunk didn't stick to the fibers). I haven't had that problem since, but I wonder what it was.tcarswell;2881917; said:

I started out cleaning mine when I just used quilt batting, but after a few times of it I gave up. For the work and time involved, it is so inexpensive that it just wasn't worth it. When I started using the floss with it, there was just no way I was going to clean it.
I use pillow batting as well. I try to change it every other week (as it collects gunk).
You can get it cheaper than Wal-Mart at Michaels (craft store chain) with their 40% off weekly coupon (in Sunday paper or usually in the store)...and you won't be supporting Wal-Mart's abuse of military reservists and other employees (http://www.usdoj.gov/usao/hi/military/dojpr/080501.html )
