Andinoacara stalsbergi is what is considered the true Green Terror. Andinoacara (Aequides) rivulatus sp. gold/silver saum is the fish we encounter in the LFS. You can Google the names for full discriptions and locations.

Most people would say that A. rivulatus is the 'true' GT as it was the first one to be described. The fish that most people have, including the one in the OP's avatar, is A. aequinoctalis.

This is A. stalsbergi, the fish originally introduced as 'silver saum' when 'Green Terrors' were already available.

The first pic here is A. rivulatus. The others are A. stalsbergi.

The recent classification was based on the work of Alf Stalsberg, among others. Alf's identification page is here...

^excelant site, in Geraman but a picture's worth a thousand words!

I am just imagining a store clerk at the LFS pointing at a cardboard cut-out of a GT, then the buyer getting home with it, getting on here and going "BLAST, another fake!" :screwy:

fake, false, common, uncommon, i think he got his point across well enough. Like all common names there is such a thing only because people use it.

The word "false" is used in nomenclature to refer to the fact that the species is similar to, but different from the species that the name was originally used for. It has no derogatory meaning (unlike "fake") and the species is in no way inferior to the "true" species.

For example, Caquetaia species are called "false basketmouth" (the "true" basketmouth being Acaronia nassa), A. robertsoni is called "false firemouth", P. motaguensis is called "Yellow Jacket Cichlid" ("true" = P. friedrichsthalli).

You don't like common names, do you? Then stop making them more confusing. Now people are going to ask "is fake GT and false GT the same fish"!!
