What is the minimum tank size for these four fish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Just thought I'd state something we already know... a 55g tank is 13" wide and those fish being discussed get 12-16" long... just saying. As a grow out tank a 55g would work, but not long term. Maybe a GT in a 55g... maybe, but the RD and Oscar need at least a 75g. The Jag as an adult needs 6' long and 2' wide to start... they are beasts!!! I would just say to get the biggest tank you can afford.

1. Oscar----40 Gallon BREEDER or 75 gallon+
2. Green Terror--55 Gallon
3. Red Devil---40 Gallon BREEDER or 75 gallon+
4. Jaguar cichlid----150 Gallon+

Yes, and it is. That 100% qualifies for 1 of the worst answers to a question on MFK so far this year (and thats saying A LOT!).

A 40 breeder is not sufficient for anything that gets bigger than 5"...unless you like to half ass things in your life and dont want to provide the best you can for your fish.

EXTREME BARE MINIMUM is not what anyone should suggest for a fish that gets 12". If thats all you can get, dont get a big fish. Simple as that.

Perfect example of what I was talking about in my prior post in this thread.

Actually, if you think about it. A 40 Breeder is 18 inches wide and 3 feet long. Not sure about the height, but at least your those fish can turn comfortably.

@VRWC: You want people to google what should be the minimum? I just googled it and I got a ton of hits saying a 40 Gallon or 55 Gallon. The OP asked whats the minimum, I gave it to him. He didn't ask for the ideal.

while a 40g breeder might have the right dimensions, with a fish like an oscar that is not nearly enough water volume, you would have to be doing water changes every other day in order to keep nitrates low enough to not stunt the poor thing
