What is the perfect size tank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I like the 75 gal.
Same as the 55 just a few inches more width, and same as the 90 just a few inches shorter.

75 seems just right.

The next step up is a good 120gal. 4'X2' tank
then on to the 6 foot tanks.
inho

best size tank
10000000000000000 gallons...
lol but in all seriousness a 125 is the best if you can get ur hands on a cheap one

I think 55s are a terrible size to start with if you want big cichlids. 12 inches isn't wide enough. A 75 is a ton better to start with. For community fish...do whatever lol. A 40 gallon breeder is a good size as well, for smaller cichlids.

After 75, most people probably skip to 6 foot tanks. There are 5 foot tanks, they just aren't very common. I wouldn't mind having a 5 foot 120 though. :)

That is a great big leap from 20 gallons to 240 gallons. My suggestion is to read a lot and spend a little. 240 is BIG and it does take a lot more work than you might imagine at first thought. I do agree it is a new and exciting level, so read, study and draw out plans. Ask, read some more and then when it all comes together you will be ready for the adventure. WOW, 240. This new level is going to be AWESOME!

The OP was talking about a 55 or 75, I'm gettin the 240. I know it will be a lot of work and is a gigantic leap from what I currently have, however, I've been on this site religiously for the last 2 months reading pretty much everything i can. The first thing i did after finding this site is read the first 10+ pages on the lessons learned forum haha. I like to think I've learned a ton about setups and fish i don't, and probably won't own for a while. I'm not the type of person to leap into something without researching it. :D

I think a 125 gal is a good size tank. You can put almost any fish in it and don't have to worry about upgrading.

best starter tank is the biggest one you can afford, optimally it would be a 75 or 125, but this size might overwhelm a new fishkeeper and scare them away. So go with what you like and upgrade down the road if you become dedicated!

My progression was 29 -> 75 -> 125. I looked long and hard for the 75 as opposed to the 55 because the extra width doesn't make that much difference in actually placing the tank in a room but it makes a world of difference in your stocking options. As for the 125, I would have preferred a 180 but 125s are much more available used than 180s are. I'm definitely glad I went with the 75 over a 55 though.

If you get a 55g, you'll wish ya had a 75g. However this gives you an excuse to get another tank.

for a good started tank is a toss up between a 55g and a 75g. both great tanks and u have alot of options. we hvae tons of 10gs in our home that are mine and we have them beucase i personally find it nice to have them each differently stocked. so in a way i found variety in alot of litle tank rather than one big tank. if it was up to my husband he rather have one huge tnak that a bunch f little ones. i started with 1 10g in 2006...i know have 13 so u will always find more and more fish that u ike that cant go in that tank o this tank and so on.:)
