What is the Pound 4 Pound toughest/nastiest cichlid

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Tough to say, but dovii don't get truly dominate till they get over 13''s or so. So assuming a dovii was Full grown @ 6" with the same temperament and weapons as a full grown dovii, then you would have to say a dovii. Just based on the fact that no other cichlid has the weaponry of a dovii, not to mention that you will NEVER see a fish hit the tank or tank mates harder than a dovii will. Anybody who has seen a dovii go agro will agree to that I am sure.

Pound for pound the meanest cichlid won't be CA/SA, but African mouthbrooders CA/SA are egg layers and they are aggressive during breeding episodes to protect a fixed location nest. A well fed mouthbrooder male is in breeding mood at all time and claim a moving nest throughout the tank, so anyone wihin his moving personal space will be flashed or attacked. The fighting style is also different. CA/SA like to lock jaw in fighting. Mouthbrooders like to flash or make circles and attack the body and fins to incure maximum damage. There is no contest between Africans and CA/SA.

hemichromis elongatus.... the 5 STAR GENERAL...:)

Unless its an emperor cichlid most Africans are out sized by sa / ca cichlids. Even then I think a 18" emperor would have a tough time fending off a 2' dovii.

All fully mature at 6in. I would say dovii...its really hard to overcome that weaponry and athletic ability combined with their temperment. Seen them due some major damage in a blink of an eye.

I've seen RD's, Beani's, Black Nasties, Grammodes, Umbee's all in action.

Doesn't matter at what size dovii are mature cause pound for pound when a dovii reaches the point of no return I don't believe any fish can stand a chance. Not many fish out there have such a high likelyhood of wiping out entire tanks.

The point of saying dovii is to back how beastly they are and even though they are the largest comparatively pound for pound I don't think they have competition. Convicts, neets, devils are all gravy but put them in a grow out together with a dovii as fry and see who is the last one standing, and it won't take till the dovii is an adult for there to be mayhem. Dovii may be shy at a small size but they're stone cold killers their entire life.

At 6", I would definitely say a Buttikoferi.
They are just as much of a killer as a dovii and have the ability to wipe out an entire tank as well.
They are just as quick as to attack but I believe their thick bodies and strong jaws give them the upper hand at that size.

I would also give credit to Flowerhorns. They too never give up.

Dovii can handle damage better than umbees. But at 6" my vote goes to a male Trimac!!!! I've owned alot of the top ca and sa predators and kept some together and I think a 6" Trimac is taller and beefier than any other cichlid let alone pure insanity:)
